The TUFTS BALLROOM DANCE TEAM is for those who really want to make a commitment to improve their dancing and take it to a competitive level.

About the team

The Tufts Ballroom Team originated in 1995 and has grown into a well-established team since then. The team is made up of Tufts students who love the competitive aspect of ballroom dancing. As a member of the team, these students improve their ballroom dance techniques and learn to apply them in a competitive environment, while having fun doing so.

Anyone can join the team and the Tufts Ballroom Team competes at all levels, from beginner to open. Those in the Tufts community who have an interest in learning and competing can join and no experience is necessary to join the team. The Tufts Ballroom Team does not hold tryouts: Everyone is welcome.

With the Tufts Ballroom team comes commitment. Members must attend two lessons a week taught by professional instructors. These lessons are not only helpful but fun. It is not encouraged to miss lessons but in the case that you do miss a lesson, the team holds open practices almost everyday where at least one of the Team Captains can help you catch up on what you missed or help you improve a technique you want to work on.

Competitions:
The Tufts Ballroom Team competes in many competitions at other New England colleges and universities throughout the year, in addition to holding its own in the winter.
It is greatly encouraged that you compete in as many competitions as you feel comfortable competing in, and often times, those who chose not to compete come along and cheer on the team. There is usually a fee in order to compete in the various ballroom competitions.

For new members:
The experienced team members and team captains are always willing to answer your questions about competition attire, shoes, and, in fact, the team always hosts events to help prepare new members for competiton (such as the shoe sale or mock competition).

New members start off learning American-style dances and, as the second semester rolls around, start to learn International-style dances.

Worried about not having a partner? For the first few weeks, new dancers switch among many partner, and by the second competition, most new team members end up finding a partner. If not, the captains will be happy to help you find a partner.

Participation on the Tufts Ballroom Team is always a rewarding experience. Not only do you get to practice and learn new ballroom dances as you expand your ballroom knowledge, but you also experience the sense of community and fun atmosphere that is characteristic of the team.
