This meeting is sponsored by the Exomedicine Institute. In addition to

1) getting good ideas for our own work, and

2) setting up new collaborations for interdisciplinary efforts,

I (M.L.) must produce a whitepaper for Exomedicine Institute that will be used as a source of ideas for future projects related to space exploration. You are all welcome to contribute. The main lines of inquiry to be discussed include

  • biologically-inspired strategies for self-repairing technology systems that can be used in space
  • effects of lack of gravitational and geomagnetic fields on developmental, regenerative, and other biosystems

It is hoped that by our discussions during this day, we outline a roadmap for future research that will show how to

  • identify algorithms that integrate low-level components into self-repairing complex patterning systems, and
  • utilize these strategies in bioengineered, robotics, or hybrid technologies

I will then integrate this roadmap with bench biology approaches in developmental/regenerative biology to investigate the effects of 0 GMF and gravity on the signals that mediate such information flow in vivo.
