Do you have pets?

Help us learn if and how animals can get COVID-19. We are looking for volunteers to perform simple swabs on their pets in their own home. Eligible volunteers can also take their own saliva samples to help us learn if an animal was exposed to COVID-19. We are no longer enrolling dogs and cats.

Eligibility: We are currently enrolling adults who live in the New England region of the US (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, and Vermont). Other states will be considered on a case by case basis. You must own at least one mammalian pet or farm animal. Accepted animals include ferrets, rabbits, horses, cows, pigs, mice, hamsters, and more. We are no longer enrolling dogs and cats.

For research purposes, we are prioritizing applicants who have ever had a positive COVID-19 test or were an essential worker during a regional COVID-19 outbreak.

I want to enroll my animal(s) and myself

How do I join the study?

  1. Fill out an application for our human + animal home study.
  2. If you are eligible, you select a convenient time for a team member to call and complete your enrollment.
  3. You can take a survey to help us understand possible risk factors for infection. The survey usually takes 10-15 minutes and is optional.
  4. We’ll send you a “swab and send” kit. You collect samples from yourself and your animal every other day for 2 weeks. Nasal and oral swabbing and saliva collection are quick and harmless and pose low risk of harm.
  5. Each time you collect samples at home, fill out a quick form to track any signs of illness. Sampling (and filling out the form) usually takes 10-15 minutes each time you collect samples.
  6. At the end of the study, send back the kit by either:
    i) following our shipping instructions using a prepaid FedEx mailer, or
ii) scheduling a drop-off at our lab in North Grafton, MA
  7. Samples will be tested in our lab to screen for two viruses: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 and Influenza A Virus. We will return animal swab results (tests for current infection) if you opt-in during the survey. We cannot return any human or antibody results.
