Installing RealPlayer for Multimedia Objects

Using RealPlayer

RealPlayer is the audio player recommened by the DCA for use with streaming audio and SMIL presentation materials in the TDL. RealPlayer is currently avaliable for most version of Microsoft Windows and for OS X.

To get RealPlayer on Windows:

  1. Go to http://www.real.com
  2. Click on the "Free Download" icon on the right-hand side
  3. Choose the "Basic Player" on the right-hand side by clicking on the "Get RealPlayer – Free" link
  4. Download and run the RealPlayer executable
  5. Click "Accept" at the setup screen
  6. Choose an installation location and click "next"
  7. Either set RealPlayer to be your "Universal Media Player" or select from the list at least the "RealAudio / RealVideo (rm)" and "SMIL Multimedia Presentation (smi smil)" options
  8. RealPlayer will now present you with several options for add-ons. Select any options you desire and click "continue" until you reach the registration page.
  9. You may either register now or click cancel to skip registration.
  10. RealPlayer is now installed.

NOTE: RealPlayer 10 has some stability issues when viewing SMIL presentations. Pausing and restarting playback or attempting to skip forward or backward in the stream will often cause RealPlayer to lock up. As far as we are aware, this is a RealPlayer bug and not an issue with our presentation files; however, we apologize for the inconvenience.

To get RealPlayer on Mac OS X:

  1. Go to http://www.real.com
  2. Click on the "RealPlayer – Free" icon in the upper right-hand corner
  3. Register with Real by entering a valid email address and a new password in the left-hand boxes. Click on the "start here" button.
  4. You will arrive at a page with detailed instructions for downloading RealPlayer and completing your install.
  5. Follow the directions on the install page to start RealPlayer.
  6. Click "Continue" or "Accept" until the setup assistant displays a list of media types.
  7. Select at least the "Real-Time Streaming Protocol" and the "SMIL Multimedia Presentation" options and click Done.
  8. Click "Configure" to allow RealPlayer to complete installation.
  9. RealPlayer will open and play a short welcome clip.
  10. RealPlayer is now installed.

NOTE: RealPlayer 10 has some stability issues when viewing SMIL presentations.
