Working with Oral Histories

Streaming Audio

The streaming audio requires RealPlayer. Install RealPlayer and click on the "RealPlayer Streaming Audio" link on the left-hand side. Your browser should allow you to open the file directly in RealPlayer. If it does not save the ".ram" file onto your Desktop and open it in RealPlayer.

Downloadable MP3

A full MP3 of the audio is also available, which should function in any media player supporting MP3 files. Click on the "Downloadable MP3" link to download the full MP3 audio.

Viewing the Presentation

TDL oral histories have been time-marked and synchronized with the text transcript. You can view the text of the transcript along with the audio by viewing the SMIL presentation. Currently, the SMIL presentation requires RealPlayer. Install RealPlayer (link to above) and click on the "Transcript and Audio Presentation (RealPlayer)" link. Your browser should allow you to open the file directly in RealPlayer. If it does not, save the file onto your Desktop. Rename the file so it has a ".smil" extension, and open it in RealPlayer.

NOTE: RealPlayer 10 for Windows has some stability issues when viewing SMIL presentations. Pausing and restarting playback or attempting to skip forward or backward in the stream will often cause RealPlayer to lock up. As far as we are aware, this is a RealPlayer bug and not an issue with our presentation files; however, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Using the RSS/Atom Feeds

Each oral history object has an associated RSS/Atom feed which lists the multimedia formats in which the object can be viewed. Many modern browsers, including Firefox, Safari, and IE7 include native functionality to view RSS streams. Click on the RSS icon in the right-hand side of the URL bar of the Tufts Digital Library page. Alternately, you can get the RSS URL from the "RSS/Atom Feed" link in the left-hand side-bar for use in an external feed-reader.
