New Members of the Team

Karen Culbert has joined the School of Dental Medicine as director of development, where she will be responsible for overseeing the annual fund and major gifts programs. Culbert comes to the dental school from Tufts’ Medford campus, where she was associate director of development, traveling across the Northeast and Southern states on behalf of all the university’s undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. Prior to that position, she spent nine years at Concord Academy in Concord, Massachusetts, serving in many development roles, including director of engagement. Her previous professional experience includes development and engagement roles at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and at New England Deaconess Hospital (now known as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). Culbert received a bachelor’s degree from Merrimack College and a master’s degree from Boston University.

Sonnya Morales is the new associate director of corporate and foundation relations for the School of Dental Medicine, and will focus on securing corporate and foundation support. Originally from Medellín, Colombia, Morales began her career as an English teacher in Japan, and then taught high school Spanish and worked as an adult ESL teacher in New Jersey. Morales has held a variety of roles in higher education administration, most recently as director of institutional support at Cambridge College, where she was key in building a robust foundation and corporate funder pipeline. She also worked as director of Project ALERTA at UMass Boston, leading a nationally recognized enrichment program for elementary school-aged Latino and English language learners in Boston Public Schools, and in state relations and regulatory affairs at Lesley University. Morales received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Ursinus College and a master’s degree in intercultural relations from Lesley University.
