A team from the Tufts Hispanic Dental Association won second place in a national contest sponsored by Colgate, “Nuestros Ninos,” to address oral health-care in Hispanic children. The team was led by Krysten Herrero, D18, and Elizabeth Betances, D18, and received guidance from Martha Forero, clinical instructor in pediatric dentistry. The team members included Ann-Marie Vu, D19; Brandon Wong, D18; Isamary Bernet, D18; Yusleisy Camacho, D18; Rocio Saavedra, clinical instructor in pediatric dentistry, and Leopoldo Correa, DG11, associate professor in diagnostic sciences. The team developed a comic strip called “Sonrisas Sanas Son Salud” (“Healthy Smiles are Health”) to educate parents and children about brushing and flossing habits, nutrition, dental visits, fluoride use, and the importance of parental supervision in home care. On the other side of the comic strip is a chart where parents can keep track of daily brushing, to show to the dentist. Betances presented about the project at the 2017 Greater New York Dental Meeting.
