September 2nd marked the launch of the new and improved Tufts events calendar. This calendar makes it easier for users to share events with their friends, sign up for reminders via email or text message and even create QR codes. Additionally, users can now add events to their own calendars (such as Outlook or Google), filter events and view upcoming events in specific buildings. The calendar integrates with other Web Comm applications and sites, as well, including our interactive campus maps application, the Tufts Mobile site and Tufts Now.
User testing played an important role in this project. Based on reactions and feedback from our testers, we revised and greatly simplified both the layout and navigation of the calendar. User feedback also influenced the help section and on-page tips.
One of the biggest benefits of the new calendar is the ability to embed event widgets in other websites. For example, if the School of Dental Medicine wished to have a listing of Dental-only events, their only option with the old calendar would be to insert an RSS feed. The new widgets allow for a more customizable, better-looking design. Tufts Now will be the first website to use these widgets; they will include Featured Events on the Tufts Now homepage and in the sidebars of article pages.
Of course, a calendar is ultimately only as successful as the events it includes, so please submit your Tufts-related events!
