The Volpe Center seeks Civil Engineers (GS-0810-7-9-11-12) and Mechanical Engineers (GS-0830-7/9/11/12) in the Structures and Dynamics Division within the Office of Infrastructure Systems and Technology.  This division improves the performance and safety of the rail transportation system by applying engineering expertise, conducting railcar crashworthiness research and testing and developing new testing methods for inspecting tracks and their interaction between vehicles.  As a civil or mechanical engineer, you will have responsibility for conducting analytical and experimental studies which are intended to evaluate and improve the safety and dynamic performance of vehicles and structures for conventional and high-speed ground transportation systems.

When you work at the Volpe Center you work with people like you talented professionals who enjoy applying their expertise in the service of others and resolving real-world transportation problems.  We are located in the culturally diverse and academically rich city of Cambridge, MA (Kendall Square), and offer competitive benefits, and a flexible and family-friendly work environment including on-site child-care services.  Additional positions may be filled throughout the Volpe Center.

The ideal candidate for this position should have professional knowledge of civil and/or mechanical engineering concepts and principles, and a practical knowledge of a full range of analytical and experimental techniques, to perform portions of large projects in the areas of analytical modeling, applied mechanics, advanced material science, systems dynamics,  soil and concrete mechanics, shock and vibration effect on structures and structural dynamics.  All levels of experience and education are encouraged to apply.  If you or someone you know is interested in this position with relevant experience and a demonstrable record of proven results, I encourage you or them to apply.  We are looking for a diverse pool of qualified candidates.

There are separate announcements for the Civil Engineer and Mechanical Engineer positions, and each of those announcements are posted separately to Public and Merit Promotion eligible applicants on http://www.usajobs.gov/.  You are welcome to apply to more than one announcement.  Please know that Merit Promotion announcements are the vehicle through which Federal employees generally apply for Federal positions.
