Communications Director — HEAL Food Alliance

About the HEAL (Health, Environment, Agriculture, Labor) Food Alliance: HEAL is a national alliance bringing together various sectors of food and agriculture – rural and urban farmers, farm and other food chain workers, community organizers, activists, advocates, scientists, and policy experts. HEAL seeks to build a people-powered movement for effective policy change in our local and national food systems, from the corner store to Capitol Hill. The HEAL Food Alliance’s anchor team includes the Food Chain Workers Alliance, Movement Strategy Center, the National Black Food & Justice Alliance, Real Food Generation, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
 
About the Communications Director: The primary role of the Communications Director is to conceive, coordinate, and implement the HEAL Food Alliance’s media and communications strategy, which prioritizes uplifting the voices and perspectives of frontline communities. Key components include: (1) developing and managing HEAL’s online and offline communications strategy (2) expanding and supporting communications capacity for member organizations to drive cross-sector, coordinated campaign work, and (3) developing materials for the Alliance and our campaigns.
 
HEAL Food Alliance is a fiscally-sponsored project of Movement Strategy Center. This is a full- time, exempt, salaried position, supervised by the Director. The Communications Director will ideally be based in Oakland, CA though other locations may be considered for exceptional candidates.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential responsibilities of this position are included in, but not limited to the items below.
 
COMMUNICATIONS MANAGEMENT

 

  • Under direction of the HEAL anchor team, conceives and overseesHEAL’s online and offline media and communications strategy.
  • Works with HEAL anchor team and members to develop framing,  narrative, and messaging
  • Identifies and pursues communications-related opportunities to advance and support HEAL’s vision and campaign goals
  • Coordinates, tracks, monitors, and evaluates HEAL’s progress towards media and visibility targets.
  • Manages and administers HEAL’s website, social media presence, and other online tools as appropriate
  • Represents HEAL in meetings, at conferences and events, and in media relations as needed
  • Supports the HEAL Director in communications with strategic partners and funders
EXPANDING COMMUNICATONS CAPACITY

 

  • Supports member organizations and community leaders to serve as speakers, bloggers, and media contacts, and connects members to media opportunities
  • Implements communications strategies that support members’ local, state, and regional campaigns
  • Identifies media opportunities to uplift the work of HEAL members
  • Cultivates and expands HEAL’s relationships with and presence in traditional and new media, across mediums, and beyond food journalists and publications
  • Works with members and allies to develop media and communications in their name in support of HEAL campaigns
  • Keeps all HEAL members informed of progress, media coverage, and developing campaign work
MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

 

  • Leads production of outreach and communications materials including HEAL media tools, press releases, statements, talking points, tip sheets, and other written resources, including action alerts and rapid responses
  • Ensures that all HEAL materials reflect our core values
  • Turns complex policy information into easily accessible messages and formats for popular consumption

individuals with a demonstrated understanding of the intersections of racial, economic, and environmental justice, who are committed to transformative change.
 
This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Pay is $55-60,000, depending on experience. Some travel will be required.
