Research Coordinator, Lincoln Park Zoo

We are looking for a full-time research coordinator to help implement an NSF-funded project to further develop the COMPADRE/COMADRE database (http://www.compadre-db.org/). The position will be for the duration of the grant (3 years), and will be based at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. GENERAL SUMMARY
The Research Coordinator is a full-time position to help implement an NSF-funded project to further develop the COMPADRE/COMADRE database, a global repository for animal and plant demographic data. The Research Coordinator will facilitate the project by overseeing and coordinating data digitization across the multinational collaborating research teams. S/he will also work with programmers to help develop and test the new database as it is developed, and assist in organizing and conducting user engagement workshops at scientific conferences. The Research Coordinator will be based at Lincoln Park Zoo, but will work closely with a dynamic project team involving collaborators in England, Denmark, Germany, and Ireland.

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide support for and maintain communication among the collaborating research teams
• Supervise and delegate workload among the data digitization team, ensuring accurate and consistent data compilation
• Train and create training materials for new digitization assistants
• Travel (nationally and internationally) to attend team meetings and conduct user engagement workshops
• Participate in the Conservation and Science Department’s team approach to research and data management
• Perform other tasks and duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Successful candidates will have excellent organizational, communication (written and oral), and time management skills. Candidates should be detail-oriented and have strong problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and an ability to quickly learn new methods and software. Experience with database software such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, programming in R and Python, and/or managing a code repository on GitHub is desirable.
• Ability to manage multiple projects.
• Experience managing research assistants or staff is desirable.
• Ability to work independently and in collaborative settings.
• Available to attend work meetings which may occur outside of regular work hours as assigned.
• Ability to represent the Zoo and the project in a professional manner at all times.
• Must be able to work at computer for 8 hours per day.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in science essential, Master’s degree in biology or related discipline preferred. A background in ecology, population biology, or mathematical biology is desirable but not required. Experience in developing data repositories, comparative analysis of large datasets, data visualization, and/or scientific outreach is also preferred.
