Field Crew – Oregon State University

by Marilene Rivas-Chavez on April 12, 2019

Oregon State University’s Fire and Silviculture lab is seeking applicants to join our forest and fuels monitoring field crew this summer. The crew works in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon, in beautiful Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests. Landscape-scale thinning and prescribed burning is being used as a restoration tool and our crew is tasked with monitoring how the forest responds to these restoration treatments. Crew members will gather data about changes to forest structure, wildland fire fuels, and understory plants. We’re looking for people who love to be outside (but can work in sun/heat), have good attention to detail, can work as a team, and are excited about forest restoration. Crew members will work 8 days on, 6 days off starting in mid June. Housing and transportation to field sites are provided.

We are in our 6th year of data collection and view this job as an excellent learning opportunity for those interested in ecology, forest management, or wildland fire behavior. We work collaboratively with the Blue Mountains Forest Partners, High Desert Partnership, and US Forest Service but crew members will be hired as employees of Oregon State University. Experience with forest inventory or understory vegetation measurements is useful. Strong botany skills are highly desired.
