AmeriCorps Green Mountain Farm-to-School Coordinator

Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a nonprofit organization promoting the health and wellbeing of Vermont’s children, farms and communities by providing programs to connect schools and farms through food and education. In the 2013-2014 academic year, GMFTS aims to serve school communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont with school gardens, educational programming and fresh local farm foods, benefiting over 5,000 students. Position Description

The primary responsibilities of the Farm-to-School Coordinator will be to develop, grow, present, and evaluate GMFTS’ Farm-to-School Programs and provide general operational and administrative support. This is a full-time year-long AmeriCorps position. The Farm-to-School Coordinator reports to the Program Director.

Start-Date: August 19, 2013

Location: Newport, Vermont

The Farm-to-School Coordinator will:

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with GMFTS school and farm partners; Serve as the primary contact for 2-4 schools
  • Deliver GMFTS educational programs and events including taste tests, farm field trips, and in-class workshops
  • Create lesson plans for programming and maintain educational materials
  • Coordinate and maintain school gardens
  • Encourage local food purchasing by schools
  • Design outreach and publicity materials
  • Use database to collect, analyze, and report data for program evaluation
  • Work closely with staff, parents, food service directors, and farmers
  • Facilitate monthly Farm-to-School Committee meetings
  • Work as an independent member of a team of Coordinators
  • Plan and organize community events
  • Provide general support to organization, as necessary

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of local food systems and sustainable agriculture
  • Strong interest in working with children, teaching (formal or non-formal) experience required
  • Some knowledge of gardening and vegetable production needed
  • Excellent public speaking, writing skills, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly growing non-profit environment
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation

AmeriCorps Members who complete their term of service in a full-time position will receive:

  • A biweekly stipend totaling $12,200 for the year
  • Health insurance, if not covered under another policy
  • Child care, if necessary

  • Monthly SNAP benefits
  • Available housing

National Wildlife Federation: 2013 Campus Ecology Fellowships

National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology Program is currently accepting applications for our 2013 class of Campus Ecology Fellows.

NWF’s Campus Ecology Fellows confront climate change on their campuses and help to educate and engage the campus community on climate action solutions. Monetary fellowship grants are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students working with members of the faculty, staff, or administration on projects designed to help address climate change impacts and to protect wildlife and habitat on campus and beyond. In addition to a modest grant, Fellows also receive project support, leadership development, recognition of their accomplishments and other perks.

This year’s Fellows will have the unique opportunity to work with one of four of NWF’s crucial “Keep The Wild Alive” campaigns:

  •  Stopping Expansion of Dirty Energy
  •  Safeguarding Wildlife and Habitat in the Appalachian Forests
  •  Protecting Wildlife in Urban and Suburban Habitats
  • Clean Energy Solutions

Summer Scholars Program

The Tufts Summer Scholars Program is funded by the Office of the Provost and by generous gifts from: Dr. Kimberly and Mr. Robert Gatof; Mr. Thomas C. Jackson; Mr. George and Ms. Susan Kokulis; Mr. John L. Kokulis; Mr. Christopher A. and Mrs. Sue White; Mr. David and Ms. Randi Zussman; Mr. Neil Sandler; Mr. Andrew Bendetson in honor of Laura and Martin Bendetson; and the Board of Trustees in honor of former Chairman, Mr. Nathan Gantcher.

The Program is also supported by the Schwartz Paddock Family Fellowships in the Visual and Performing Arts, the Helen and Werner Lob Student Research Fund in Economics and Christopher Columbus Discovery Summer Scholarships for research spanning disciplinary boundaries. Summer Scholars is administered by the Office of Undergraduate Education.

14th annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium (URSS)

14th annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium (URSS) on Saturday April 21st, 2012.

Tufts undergraduates who have participated in or are currently engaged in scholarly work independently or under the supervision of a faculty mentor are invited to present at the conference. Please encourage students working with you to present at this year’s URSS as the symposium provides an excellent opportunity for students to share their research, hone their presentation skills, and engage with like-minded peers participating in some of the exciting scholarship ongoing at Tufts University. LSP Association Scholarship Fund

The LSP Association Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for educational scholarships for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. The purpose of the scholarship program is to support continued education in environmental fields in New England, and specifically Massachusetts.

Our goal this year is to provide two scholarships, each up to an amount of $5,000, to qualified individuals. One of the scholarships will be awarded to an individual who is part of the LSP community; that is, you or an immediate member of your family must be an LSP Association member, and the individual must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited New England college or university.

Another scholarship will be awarded to a qualified Massachusetts resident who is enrolled in a public or private Massachusetts college or university with a major that is consistent with becoming an LSP.

Study Abroad-Gilman Scholarship

Are you interested in studying abroad, but are unable to afford it?

Trying to find a program that is environmentally related? Or where you can practice your French?

If you’re a Pell grant recipient, you’re eligible to apply for the Gilman scholarship, which awards up to $5000 to qualified and accepted students! And if you’re into baobabs and lemurs, Madagascar may just be the place for you!

Come to this info session meeting to learn more! It will be an overview of the SIT: Madagascar, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management program and how to go about applying for the Gilman Scholarship by a couple of Gilman recipients. It will take place on Friday, November 4th in the Zamparelli Room (Campus Center 112) from 5:15 to 6:30pm.
