In this workshop, participants will hear from health sciences faculty who are “flipping” their classes. The flipped (or “inverted”) classroom describes a teaching approach in which students get a first exposure to course content before class through readings or videos, then spend class time deepening their understanding of that content through active learning exercises. The goal is to maximize the impact of the time that faculty and students spend together in the classroom by cultivating deep learning during that time. The ideas underlying this approach are nothing new, but the range of tools to support this shift and the clarity around best practices is coming into focus with new clarity. This session will explore in detail what faculty are doing, how it’s working, what to think about as you get started, and how to build on successes over time

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key components of the flipped classroom approach and identify specific opportunities and challenges in health-sciences classes,
  • Decide whether to flip part of their class and if so where to start,
  • Outline a plan for implementing their flip,
  • Select technologies to use for their flip and identify resources to help them moving forward.
