Professor David Williamson Shaffer of the University of Wisconsin spoke at Tufts on Oct. 3 as part of the STEM Education Lecture Series. He discussed a perspective on learning and assessment suited to the global economy of the 21st century and the realities of modern work and education in a knowledge society.
The Tufts STEM Education Lecture Series highlights innovative STEM education research in an effort to increase collaboration between universities and organizations dedicated to improving the way students learn. This new lecture series is a joint venture between the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) and the Tufts Department of Education.

On April 25, noted journalist and author Bob Woodward was on campus to speak as part of the Snyder President’s Lecture Series. Woodward’s talk was titled “From Nixon to Obama.” He spoke and answered questions on Watergate, the American presidency and the field of investigative journalism.

On Apr. 14, the Center for International Environment & Resource Policy’s Energy, Climate, and Innovation Program welcomed Dr. Lakshmi Karan, MALD ’00 and Ph.D. ‘09, to deliver a talk on social entrepreneurship and innovation titled “The Innovation Revolution: How Social Entrepreneurs are Challenging the Status Quo to Address the World’s Most Pressing Problems.”
Dr. Karan’s presentation offered insight into this movement and offered examples from around the world of innovators, who have different business models, growth strategies and financing mechanisms, but share one common objective: to deliver high quality, sustainable impact.
Dr. Karan serves as Director of Global Strategy at Riders for Health, a social enterprise that delivers health services to over 10 million people in sub-Saharan Africa.

Katie Couric was on the Medford/Somerville campus on Apr. 11, to participate in the sixth annual Edward R. Murrow Forum on Issues in Journalism. She drew on her 30 years as a journalist to address the evolution of today’s news industry. Jonathan Tisch, A76 and Tufts trustee, led the discussion before opening the forum to questions from the audience.
The forum is sponsored by Tufts University’s Communications and Media Studies Program, the Edward R. Murrow Center of Public Diplomacy, and the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service.

On Saturday April 9, Tisch College hosted a day-long celebration of The Active Civic Roles of Tufts Alumni. The event included presentations from Tufts alumni and faculty who are leading innovators in their field, a networking lunch, panel discussions and an opportunity to recognize alumni from the undergraduate and professional schools.
