Commencing a New Year with Convocation

By James Stavridis On September 15, 2017 · Leave a Comment

As I walked around campus these past two weeks, it has been thrilling to see our sea of new faces. The start of a new school year is always filled with exciting novelty – new courses to take, new faculty members to welcome and, of course, a new cohort of inspiring students beginning their Fletcher […]

Winter is Coming to the Korean Peninsula

By James Stavridis On September 9, 2017 · Leave a Comment

You might have thought the latest season of Game of Thrones wrapped in August, but it appears that Kim Jung-un didn’t want the show to end just yet. When it comes to North Korea, winter is most certainly coming. Tensions on the Korean peninsula are at the highest point since the Korean War following the […]

Welcome Aboard…

By James Stavridis On September 1, 2017 · Leave a Comment

With all that’s been going on these past few months both at home and abroad, I’m not entirely sure where this summer went. That said, I always welcome these final dog days of summer because with them comes the return of friendly Fletcher faces, as well as a new sea of students (and incredible new […]

Afghanistan Announcements, Naval Collisions, and Divisive Presidential Remarks: A Week of All-Too-Familiar Events

By James Stavridis On August 25, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Where to begin? This has been a week of non-stop headline-making news: We’ve had promises for a “new approach” in Afghanistan; another tragic and deadly collision involving our Navy’s 7th fleet and a sister ship to the USS Fitzgerald; remarks from a President intent on returning to his campaign’s glory days that stoke the coals […]

Charting a Course

By James Stavridis On August 18, 2017 · Leave a Comment

This has been a sad and disturbing week for our nation.

Following the devastating events in Charlottesville, Virginia, we witnessed our President fail to condemn neo-Nazis and white supremacists immediately, consistently, and definitively. Since then, we’ve seen a firestorm of fully justified criticism create deep divisions between branches of government and civil society, further exacerbating […]

My (Unsolicited) Advice for the President: How to Handle the North Korean Crisis

By James Stavridis On August 11, 2017 · Leave a Comment

In times of crisis, there’s a delicate balance to be had in judging your adversaries. Determinations must be made as to the appropriate mix of tough talk and diplomacy that will ultimately help you achieve your goal. It’s times like these that require a president to gather the best minds for counsel, employ prudent word […]

Sit back, relax, and catch up on the week’s news

By James Stavridis On August 4, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Here in the northeast, we’ve reached the dog days of summer. It’s hot, a little humid and attentions are mostly turned to finding the nearest lake, beachfront, or patio-equipped watering hole.

For most people, the furthest thing from their minds are the machinations of Washington D.C., the latest antics of the North Korean leader, or […]

Tyrants of the East

By James Stavridis On July 31, 2017 · Leave a Comment

It seems like Russia and/or North Korea pop into our newsfeeds almost every week, and these tyrants of the East – Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un – will continue to be irksome thorns in the side of the West until we find a way to properly deal with them. In order to reign these leaders […]

From Counterterrorism to the Classroom: A Chat with Professor Michele L. Malvesti

By James Stavridis On July 20, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Regular readers will know that one of my favorite things to do (aside from sipping Mai Tai’s in Hawaii) is having the opportunity to sit down with our esteemed (and endlessly interesting!) crew of faculty members to find out about their work prior to joining the Fletcher family. More importantly, I relish getting to […]

A week for proud moments

By James Stavridis On July 14, 2017 · Leave a Comment

This week, I count myself particularly fortunate. I have the luxury of being able to share two things of which I am quite proud, one of a personal nature, and one professional.

First, the personal. As I write this post from the shores of Honolulu, I am filled with honor and pride (and MaiTais). This […]
