Open Position: Davis Square Farmers Market Manager

The Davis Square Farmers Market is looking to hire a Market Manager for the 2017 season, from mid-May to late November. The position requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week, 8 of which are on the day of the market (Wednesdays). Compensation is $15-20 per hour, depending on experience. Requirements:

  • Must have access to a vehicle or some other means of transporting all supplies to and from market each week
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs
  • Must be available by cell phone on market days and regularly by email throughout the duration of the season
  • Must be reliable, friendly, self-motivated, and confident
  • Must have good communication and conflict management skills
  • Ideal candidate is interested in local agriculture, food, community, and/or local economies

The manager’s responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Market promotion via social media and other platforms
  • Weekly record-keeping and reporting
  • Design and implementation of strategies to meet the needs of vendors and consumers
  • Conflict resolution and enforcement of market rules
  • Ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the market
  • Communication and maintenance of good working relationships with Mass Farmers Market (MFM) staff, other market managers, market advisor, farmers and vendors, consumers, and community members and organizations
  •  Set-up assistance
  • Consumer education in the areas of locally grown produce and the role of farmers markets in the Greater Boston Food System
  • Identification of (and possibly communication with) potential new stakeholders such as businesses, community organizations, and local officials who might get involved with the market
  • Leading of educational and cultural programming such as cooking demonstrations
  • Volunteer recruitment and coordination
