Workshop 1: Food Economy Experience

Complete Facilitator’s Guide

Overview

The food economy experience workshop is the first in this popular education curriculum. This workshop follows popular education theory in that it begins with the individual experience. Then when those experiences are shared the group looks for patterns and generalizations within those experiences. The activities in this workshop were chosen to be interacting and engage participants in thinking about their own personal food economy story and shared themes and patterns in the larger community story.

Some of the activities are essential to meeting the objectives of the workshop, while others are additional resources that help enhance the experience and get to a deeper understanding of the topic. The suggested agenda (included below) will highlight which activities are essential for any workshop and which can be added if time allows.

In the workshops that follow participants will dive deeper into issues with the current food economy and discover potential solutions. At the next workshop session (Workshop 2), new information will explored in an engaging manner featuring many visuals and hands on activities. Topics will include food systems, the impact of the food on the environment, the economy and equality and new economy solutions. The last workshop in the series will provide an opportunity for participants to consider the changes they believe are necessary and create a plan of action to make that change happen.

Goals

Through this workshop participants will be able to:
  1. Identify and record their relationship to the food economy.
  2. Share their relationship to the food economy in order to construct a representation of the communities relationship to the food economy.
  3. Examine patterns in community food purchasing data.
  4. Categorize implications of collective experiences on topics such as local economy, environmental impact, access, jobs and nutrition.
