We are pleased to share that an art exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May down on the 4th floor. The exhibit, I Am More, is the work of artist Amy Kerr and is being hosted by the Office of Student Wellness in concert with Mental Health Awareness Month. There will be an opening reception down by the exhibit on 5/11 at 2:30pm.

Here’s some information from Student Wellness about the exhibit:

“The exhibit features pastel and colored pencil portraits by artist Amy Kerr, accompanied by essays written by subjects describing how they are more than their life challenges. The portraits address mental illness and addiction recovery, coping with medical diagnoses, and surviving trauma. Despite the challenging topics, the message is one of hope and resilience, and sometimes even humor and joy. The exhibit includes mental health resources and emergency number cards.Since 2018, I Am More has traveled to universities, shopping malls, hospitals, libraries, and government buildings around the northeast, including the Massachusetts State House, as a reminder that despite our challenges we all have gifts, loves, and triumphs to celebrate.”

We hope you will come take a moment to check it out!

We are delighted to announce that our half-time reference assistant, Katie Kidwell, will be taking on the role of Evening & Weekend Coordinator! This position plays a vital part in keeping our library running outside typical business hours, collects data about library usage, and manages our fantastic student staff. We are thrilled to have her spending even more time at Hirsh!

We will be having one more extended hours weekend this Saturday 4/29 and Sunday 4/30! The library will be open from 10am-10pm on both days. We’ll also have free coffee available on Saturday down on the 4th floor starting around 5pm. Best of luck as you enter this final end of semester push!

Need a good luck charm to get you through finals? Want to give a friend a boost while they’re in a marathon study session? Then stop by the Library Service Desk on Thursday 4/13 and Friday 4/14 starting at noon! We’ll have all the supplies you need to make some motivational tokens for yourself or your friends. We have a variety glass gems and paint pens to create a pocket-sized work of art. And as a bonus, we’re bringing out the button-maker!

Hope to see you there!

Do you find yourself, someone with an undoubtedly large amount of free time, thinking “I wish I had a part-time job with flexible hours with really great people that was also conveniently located near where I go to school?”

Great news: we’re hiring! If you’ve ever checked out a laptop, charger, or markers, especially on evenings or weekends, you know that HHSL relies on students like you to keep the desk open and operating smoothly.

We are looking for current graduate students who can check out materials (anatomical models and laptops), help patrons find books and articles (in the stacks and online), and support the Research & Instruction staff (through tasks like scanning articles for Interlibrary Loan). The schedule is fixed but flexible, with students working approximately 6-8 hours a week across two scheduled shifts (with the occasional opportunity to swap, drop, and pick up shifts). Pay is $15/hour. You’ll get the chance to work in a great environment alongside classmates and students from other program on campus, polish your research and communication skills, and get to know librarians, students, faculty, and Tufts Medical Center staff.

Do we still have your attention? Great – then you should fill out an application! We’ll begin the hiring process for summer on April 10, with individual start dates somewhat malleable. Not available this summer, but will be in the fall? Go ahead and apply, making note of your schedule on your application.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to hhslcirc@tufts.edu or stop by the desk to chat with your friendly, neighborhood librarian. All of us here at HHSL look forward to working with you!

Cam Duval

We’re sad to announce that another staff member is departing, but thrilled that he’ll be going on to something great! Our Collections Assistant, Cam Duval, has been hired to work on a project to catalog the Boston Public Library’s Founding Research Collection. The Founding Research Collection was the BPL’s original catalog from the 1840s-1930s that unfortunately ceased to be available to the public. The project he’s joining is working to make them available for public scholarship again. He previously worked on this project in 2019-2020, and is looking forward to getting back to it!

We wish him well as he embarks on this next phase of his cataloging career!

Dominique

Please join us in saying goodbye and congratulations to our Evening and Weekend Coordinator, Dominique! She is moving on to a great new job opportunity in her field of study. We wish her the best in her new position and as she completes her MSW. We will all miss chatting with her at the desk! Her last day is today, March 30th, so take a moment to stop by and wish her well.

Annie Colby McKeon

Please join us in welcoming our new Senior Reference Assistant, Annie Colby-McKeon!  She previously worked in circulation at the Cambridge Public Library and will be pursuing a library degree at Simmons in the fall. In her free time, she enjoys crocheting and roller-skating. We’re so happy to have her on staff!

In a study rut? Join us down at the Library Service Desk today at 2:30pm for a break! We’ll have tea and treats to help fuel your afternoon. And while you’re there, submit a few wishes to our Library Fairy box!

Congratulations on your match, Class of 2023!  We can’t wait to celebrate with you this Friday on Match Day and learn where you’re headed!

For those of you not in the know, Match Day is an annual event that began in 1952 where medical students learn where they will go for their residency program.  On Friday, March 17th the Library Service Desk on the 4th floor will be closed from 11am-2pm to accommodate celebrations for this event.  All other floors will be open for study.  Please plan on obtaining laptops and reserve items prior to 11am if you need them. In addition,  the Food4Thought Cafe’s kitchen and coffee station will be closed Thursday afternoon and evening, for preparations, and all day Friday, but the usual self check-out items will be available.

Thank you!
