Tom (L) and Leo (the Skeleton) (R)

It is with mixed emotions we announce the departure of our beloved Evening & Weekend Coordinator, Tom Quinn. Tom has been part of our circulation team since 2013, supervising student assistants and managing the Library Service Desk in the evenings and weekends (as the title implies).

In the time he’s been here, Tom has gotten his MLIS degree, created our blocking system, and co-published a chapter about the crafts we host here at the library.

He says, though, that he is proudest of making the desk an open and comfortable space to come for help or company. Students and staff have swung by for conversation or to create a study buddy for years, and that’s in large part thanks to Tom’s work here at circulation.

Be sure to stop by the desk and say goodbye with us before his last day, Thursday, Jan 27.

We have new books on display in the Leisure Reading section on the 4th floor that we hope you’ll find helpful for sticking to your resolution – or maybe they’ll inspire you to take on a new one.

Jumbosearch Upgrade text imposed over screenshot of Jumbosearch

On Jan. 12, 2022, JumboSearch will be upgraded to a new version. While this version may look similar to the old, Tufts Libraries Staff have thoroughly reviewed the new interface and have updated it to provide an even better user experience than before.

There should be no interruptions to JumboSearch access during the upgrade on Jan. 12th.

How will JumboSearch be different after the upgrade?

JumboSearch will mostly look and act the same but there are some changes. Here are the highlights:

  • Easier to read interface, including clearer language to help you see and access our print and e-holdings
  • Audio and video resources types will be separated, allowing more precise searching and filtering
  • You’ll be able to search within a journal directly from a journal result
  • Updates to materials within JumboSearch will be faster than before – this will be especially helpful at the start of the semester when items are placed on course reserve

What will happen to My Account?

Your saved records will be copied over – you don’t have to do anything.

Your saved searches and search history will not be copied over. We recommend you copy your saved searches and history. We may be able to retrieve saved searches on your behalf but there are no guarantees. If you need help finding saved searches or history in your account, please contact a librarian.

What about my links and bookmarks to JumboSearch?

Your links and bookmarks will automatically redirect to the right place after the upgrade. However, please check and update your links and bookmarks when you can.

I still have questions!

Just Ask Us! if you have any questions or concerns you have. We’re happy to help!

Cam Duval

We are pleased to welcome Cam Duval as our new Collections Assistant!

Originally from Framingham, Massachusetts, Cam started his library career at the Pennsylvania State University libraries as a sheet music and A/V materials cataloger. After moving back to New England, Cam worked as a cataloger on a project to help preserve the Boston Public Library’s Founding Research Collection and as a proofreader on the BPL’s Anti-Slavery Manuscript collection transcription project. When he’s not at work, Cam enjoys playing tabletop games, binge-watching 50-year-old television shows, and hunting for Steely Dan records in antique stores. He’s very glad to return to an academic library setting. Please say hello if you seem him around the library!

Please give a warm welcome to Anne Meringolo, our new Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian! She is a graduate of Simmons University MLIS program and previously worked as Collection Services Manager at New England Historic Genealogical Society. Prior to that, she worked at Simmons University as a Serials and E-Resources librarian.

When not working, and it’s not winter, she can be found in her community garden plot. If you see her around the library, please feel free to say hello!

Now that the library is getting busier and exam season approaches, we want to remind you that masks are required everywhere in the library. The only exception is if you are in a study room by yourself, or if you are eating. For a full rundown of the university’s Covid-19 guidelines, please visit https://coronavirus.tufts.edu/.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

Hi there everybody!

Starting on Sunday, October 17th, we will be bringing back the School Affiliation Week. In past years we’ve scattered our days among an entire month, but given the way life is lately we decided it would be best to have it one-and-done, like a disposable face mask at the end of a long day. Here’s how it’s going to work.

From Sunday, October 17th through Saturday, October 23rd, members of the Hirsh Library staff will be walking around 3-4 times a day with a clipboard in hand. We’re going to ask everyone in the library what school/program they’re with (Med, Dental, GSBS, etc). And that’s it. We’ll make a check mark and move on. Afterward – probably sometime in late November (so I have time to analyze and collate), I’ll be posting the data we gather right here on this blog! If you want to see what that looks like, here’s my post from June 2020.

And this is what the survey looks like for us:

If you don’t want people to get too close, or you just don’t want your studying interrupted, you can always leave your ID out, or just write your program down on a piece of paper and leave it next to you. If you’re in a study room, feel free to write down the number of people and their program(s), and tape that to the outside of the study room door (not the window). If you need paper or tape we have them at the desk! Just come ask.

Just please remember to take down any signs you put up, and to remove any IDs or papers you put on the desks by you.

If you have any questions or concerns at all, don’t hesitate to ask us! You can call us at 617-636-6706, e-mail us at hhslcirc@tufts.edu, visit our live chat on the Ask Us page, or even just swing by the desk on the 4th floor and chat to us in person.

Thank you for your assistance with this, and we look forward to a nice smooth Affiliation Week!

Now that the school year is starting, our website is one of your best tools for navigating the library space and resources. On our website, you can get any of your burning questions answered: How do the printers work? When can I talk to a librarian?

Our homepage has dozens of links to resources. You can find our databases under the “databases” tab or under Quick Links on our homepage. You can also find JumboSearch, where you can browse through Tufts University book catalogs. You can also use the Ask Us box on the far right to send us an email or chat with our library staff.

When you need to contact a librarian for help, hover over the Research tab at the top of the page and schedule a consultation with a librarian, especially if you need research help. Under the Research tab, you can also find Research Guides, which have topics ranging from biomedical sciences to health communication. You can also navigate to help with thesis support and citation tools.

Under the Services tab, you can find pages on Interlibrary Loan, printing and scanning, open workshops, and much more.

If you’re looking for something specific, you should use our search bar at the top right corner of the homepage. (And if you’ll notice, that orange bar at the top is our staffed hours, in case you want to stop by the desk!) If you have any questions about the site.

And of course, you can always stay up to date on library news here on our blog.
