Hello everyone! This Monday, October 11th, the Hirsh Library will have shorter hours in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Library Service Desk will be open from 12pm – 7pm, and we will not be on Live Chat. Although you are always welcome to e-mail us and we’ll get back to you ASAP!

Leo the Skeleton, who will greet you at the desk!

We are back in the library! As we transition back into the library, we plan to refresh your memory about the physical library space. Today, as we open the Library Service Desk again, you can now check out study materials for short-term lending.

Since we haven’t been open in over a year, all our borrowing policies are on our website. We are at the Library Service Desk on the 4th floor, where you can check out:

  • Course reserves and textbooks
  • Anatomical models
  • Electronics (e.g. laptops, chargers)

Before lockdown, if an item wasn’t returned or renewed on time, this would result in a block. Once we return to the library, everyone will have to sign our Equipment Agreement to checkout anatomical models and electronics. This Agreement outlines our blocking policy, but we’re happy to answer any questions about the policy.

Leisure reading, Graphic Medicine, the Book Stacks etc. (4th, 5th floors) will still be available for long term checkout. Print journals and current periodicals are not available for checkout, but you can browse them on the 4th and 7th floors.

And of course, you can contact us with your questions at hhsl@tufts.edu, call us at (617) 636 6705 or come up to the desk between 7:45 AM and 5:00 PM

We’re happy to see you all in person again (wearing a mask, of course)!

In honor of the Independence Day (4th of July) holiday this year, Hirsh Library will be closed Saturday, July 3rd, through Monday, July 5th. This will mean that we will not be monitoring our live chat during that time. However, you can still always e-mail us at hhsl@tufts.edu and we will get back to you when we can.

As a reminder: on Tuesday, July 6th, the Hirsh Library Service Desk will officially be re-opening! For the month of July, starting with the 6th, the Library Service Desk (on the 4th floor of the Med Ed building) will be open from 7:45am to 5pm Monday-Friday. We will still be monitoring our Live Chat until 8pm Monday-Thursday, and on the weekends as we have been. As we get closer to the fall, we hope to expand the hours, so keep an eye on the signs at the desk when you swing by to see what we’re doing!

And if you’re a student and interested in working at Hirsh Library, we have good news! We are accepting applications and are going to be hiring soon. You can read all about it right here.

Everyone at Hirsh hopes you have a happy and safe holiday weekend next weekend, and we look forward to seeing you all in person very soon!

On Tuesday, July 6th, we re-opened the Library Service Desk! For students who haven’t been to the library in a while (or at all), this will be an adjustment for us all. Our hours will be truncated while we transition to coming back to the desk full-time.

Beginning Sunday August 1st, our hours will be as follows:

M-Thu: Desk 7:45 am – 8pm

Fri: Desk 7:45 am – 7 pm

Sat: Desk 10-3; online staffed hours 3-6 pm

Sun: Desk open 12-5; online staffed hours  5-8 pm

The building will remain open until midnight, with last entry at 11pm.

The lockers for “curbside pickup” will stay where they are for now, still only usable for book requests. For more about requesting books, or checking out books when the desk is not open, please visit our page about distance checkout.

In honor of Memorial Day, Hirsh Library will be closed on Monday, May 31st. This means there will be no Live Chat coverage that day. However, if you do need assistance, you can still always e-mail us at hhsl@tufts.edu, and someone will get back to you as soon as they are able.

We hope you have a happy and healthy weekend!

In honor of Patriots’ Day here in Massachusetts (a holiday about the Battles of Lexington and Concord in the Revolutionary War, not the football team like I thought when I was a child), Hirsh Health Sciences Library will be “closed” on Sunday and Monday, April 18th & 19th.

We will not be monitoring Live Chat, but we will still be checking Ask Us. So if you have a question, feel free to submit it there (or e-mail hhsl@tufts.edu), and you’ll get an answer all the same.

Have a great weekend!

Okay, maybe there is no evidence that February is the worst month of the year. But here in Boston it’s often the coldest, snowiest month. The days are getting longer, but they’re still pretty darn short. Sitting in the sun, swimming in the ocean, warm evening breezes…they’ve never felt further away. And then there’s that pandemic.

If you’re anything like us, you’re looking at nearly a full year without travel, without far-flung friends and family, without baseball games or handshakes or hugs or parades. You’re sick of Zoom, and you have no idea what your classmates and instructors look like under their masks.

We’re here to remind you that you’re not alone! If you need to get out of the house, the Library is open for studying (social distancing and masks required). You can still request and check out books, including leisure reading for an escape. Librarians are available online for consults during regular hours, just visit us here to start a conversation!

Remember that the academic programs on campus have resources for you as well! GSBS students are encouraged to join a community of peers, while folks in the School of Medicine (including PHPD) are encouraged to reach out to Wellness Advisor (and Friend of HHSL) Sharon Snaggs for all of your student wellness and support needs. Dental Students? Your school has your back with Health and Wellness. And everyone on the Boston Health Sciences Campus is encouraged to take advantage of the services of the Student Advisory & Health Administration Office.

Off campus, remember to pay special attention to self-care during these difficult times. Don’t just take our word for it, self-care is good for your stress levels and quality of life.

Remember that we are right there with you! So try to get outside when you can, take advantage of the resources above, and look forward to the day we can see each other’s faces again.
