In honor of the Independence Day (4th of July) holiday this year, Hirsh Library will be closed Saturday, July 3rd, through Monday, July 5th. This will mean that we will not be monitoring our live chat during that time. However, you can still always e-mail us at hhsl@tufts.edu and we will get back to you when we can.

As a reminder: on Tuesday, July 6th, the Hirsh Library Service Desk will officially be re-opening! For the month of July, starting with the 6th, the Library Service Desk (on the 4th floor of the Med Ed building) will be open from 7:45am to 5pm Monday-Friday. We will still be monitoring our Live Chat until 8pm Monday-Thursday, and on the weekends as we have been. As we get closer to the fall, we hope to expand the hours, so keep an eye on the signs at the desk when you swing by to see what we’re doing!

And if you’re a student and interested in working at Hirsh Library, we have good news! We are accepting applications and are going to be hiring soon. You can read all about it right here.

Everyone at Hirsh hopes you have a happy and safe holiday weekend next weekend, and we look forward to seeing you all in person very soon!

So the 4th didn’t fall so that we got a 3-day weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun this Wednesday! There are still tons of fun events happening throughout the area and the forecast is clear for tomorrow night’s fireworks! Here are our suggestions for how to enjoy a happy and healthy holiday:

The quintessential Boston 4th of July celebration is the Boston Pops performance and fireworks show on the Esplanade. Visit the official event website for a rundown of the schedule and more event details. CBS Boston has also put together a handy guide with viewing location suggestions and other useful tips. Our favorite tip? Go to the rehearsal concert tonight (Tuesday) to enjoy the music and find a less hectic spot to watch the fireworks on Wednesday.

For activities with an educational bent, head down to Boston Harborfest. Dedicated to celebrating Boston’s harbor and history, it’s the largest 4th of July festival in the country and features tons of activities and tours, some free and some paid.  Here’s the full schedule.

Don’t want to fight the crowds for Boston fireworks on the 4th? Newton and Waltham will also have fireworks displays on Wednesday 7/4 and Somerville with have them on Thursday 7/5. If you’re interested in going farther afield, here’s a list of all the fireworks displays planned for Independence Day celebrations in MA.

Wherever and however you decide to celebrate, we hope you have a happy, healthy, and safe Independence Day. And don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

For the US Independence Day, aka 4th of July, the library will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th. The rest of the week will be regular hours.

We hope you have a fun and safe day. Enjoy the fireworks!

Hello all! Some important news about library hours for the upcoming weekend and days surrounding Independence Day. The hours will look like this:

Friday, June 30th: 7:45 am – 5 pm

Saturday, July 1st: 10 am – 5 pm

Sunday, July 2nd: closed

Monday, July 3rd: closed

Tuesday, July 4th: closed

Wednesday, July 5th: 7:45 am – 11 pm (back to normal!)

Now I know what you’re wondering: “What will I do with all of my time if the library is closes at 5 and then stays closed for 3 extra days?” Well good news, Boston has you covered! There are parades, fireworks, and even a reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House! So you can head over here and see all the information about the events this weekend.

Enjoy your time off, make sure to check out some of the celebrations, and don’t forget to put on your sunscreen!

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

As I was speaking with my sister last weekend she was in the process of trying a new way of making s’mores.  My young nephews had a lot of fun assembling these delicious treats and I can’t wait to try it this holiday weekend!  Campfire cones (or campfire treats) substitute the graham crackers for ice cream cones.  Stuff your cone with marshmallows, chocolate, and whatever else you’d like (peanut butter, strawberries, etc.).  Wrap it with tin foil and then either bake it, put it on the grill, or heat it over a campfire.  When you are finished you have this chocolatey goodness!

Tired of plain brownies?  Why not try adding things to the batter?!  I keep seeing this one with Oreos and peanut butter!  Yummy!

This last one is perfect for the 4th of July!  My family has done this trifle before!  The main ingredients include angel food cake, whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries.  One recipe can be found here:  http://bit.ly/1BUD5fu  This can also be presented as a whole cake with an American Flag pattern!
