Interprofessional Team Management of Pain: Offered Online this Summer

Today’s health care is increasingly delivered by groups of health care providers with diverse professional training, roles and identities. Lack of coordination and communication between health professionals frequently leads to decreased patient outcomes and lower patient satisfaction, carries risk management challenges, and risks provider dissatisfaction and burnout.

The analysis and shaping of team function constitute a discipline per se. Relying upon a faculty
comprised of IP educators and pain experts, this course will present methods to analyze and optimize team function as an emotional container with shared task, e.g., by recognizing common problems and addressing them effectively. Attendees will learn how teams function as small groups, how to shape teams into cohesive functional groups, and how to transform the most common threats to ongoing function of teams from destructive to constructive/creative elements. Because pain is the most common reason for patients to seek medical care, applying these general principles to optimize IP team management of pain will impact upon patient satisfaction, quality measures and potentially, and quality-based payment.

By the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to analyze and optimize, and if circumstances require create de novo, the team-based processes and policies that shape effective and efficient care of patients with pain. Through a series of interactive group exercises conducted online, enrollees will be able to successfully overcome challenges to effective pain management ranging from institutional or communication-related factors, to patient factors such as clinician “splitting” or inappropriate reliance upon controlled substances. In keeping with the PREP program’s decade-long success in training the trainers, attendees will be equipped to assume leadership roles in organizational development to optimize the assessment and treatment of pain within the medical home model.

The course will take place between June 2—July 2, 2013. Individual onsite class sessions will take place on Sunday, June 2 from 4:00-7:00pm and Monday, June 3 from 9:00am-5:00pm ET. On-line lecture sessions follow for remainder of course on dates below:
