Tufts’ Healthy Week

Last week was Tufts’ Healthy Week, brought to campus by Balance Your Life (BYL). BYL is a group dedicated to helping students eat well and encouraging students to be active.

BYL issued a challenge to the entire Tufts campus: Eat five servings of fruits and vegetable every day during Tufts Healthy Week. Eating five servings of fruits and veggies is what everyone should aim to do every day, but for many this can be difficult.

BYL turned this healthy week into an opportunity for people to publicize their healthy eating habits. By uploading pictures of meals that include at least two servings of fruits or vegetables to Facebook or Instagram, students were entered into a daily raffle.

Balance Finals

With finals upon us, things like healthy food, sleep, and trips to the gym tend to get put on the back burner. It’s much easier to grab some late night take-out than to prepare a well balanced meal in your kitchen. But, the worst thing that could happen to you during finals is getting sick, so Tufts Department of Health Education has provided a list of easy steps to follow to ensure you stay sniffles-free during this hectic time. The most unexpected tip? Staying hydrated:

During periods of intensive brain activity, water serves as the primary media and reactant in the massive metabolic reactions going on in your body and brain. To maintain health and a high level of functionality, you need to watch out for dehydration.

Healthy Jumbos

Though stereotypes of college students’ eating habits abound, Jumbos are generally known to live a healthy lifestyle, whether living in dorms or off-campus housing. These healthy tendencies are reflected in the many student-run organizations and their blogs.

Tufts Culinary Society is one of these groups. They recently wrote a very informative blog post on how to eat delicious, healthy meals on a college budget. Their suggestions included taking advantage of stores owned by Indian families, local produce and vegetables, and of course, the dining halls:

…sometimes one may feel inclined to use their meal plan to foster the creation of a home-cooked dinner, and Dewick and Carmichael are both rich with great ingredients. For example, the salad bar is full of vegetables that, in addition to adding interesting character to a salad when raw, can also be incorporated into an excellent stir-fry, stew, or pasta dish. Items that may merit particular attention are raw broccoli and cauliflower, sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tofu. Get creative with your menu ideas—there are a lot of potential ingredients in the dining halls, from vegetables to peanut butter to chocolate chips on Sundae Sundays. Above all, be moderate and discreet when gathering your ingredients.

Another group urging students to make use of local product is Tufts Sustainability Collective. In addition to strengthening the environmental community on campus, TSC built a garden on campus and recently taught students how to plant herbs for the winter in recycled containers. If you didn’t get a chance to check learn their skills and are lacking in the fresh veggies department, have no fear, Balance Your Life, a student group committed to healthy lifestyles, has got you covered! In their blog, they detail the benefits of frozen veggies and even teach us the easiest way to cook them.

‘Balance Your Life’ Blog Suggests Smoothies for a Nutritional Summer Drink

Balance Your Life (BYL) is a healthy lifestyle campaign from the Department of Health Education at Tufts. Thanks to the Balance Your Life blog, managed by soon-to-be double jumbo, Kate Sweeney (A’05, N’11), Tufts students and beyond have access to ample information about the aspects of healthy living on a college campus.

Most recently, the advice has been regarding what you could replace your coffee or tea with as the weather gets warmer. For a more summer-inspired drink that is cool and refreshing, Sweeney recommends a chilled smoothie. A smoothie is not only easy and fast to make in the dorms, but it can be taken on-the-go, and can be made with healthful ingredients.

There are many different foods you can put into a smoothie, from carrots, to pineapple, to yogurt. Some of Sweeney’s favorite are those that also have nutritional benefits, like the chopped carrot and banana smoothie, full of fiber and anti-oxidants, or the peanut butter and chocolate smoothie, giving you mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Eating Well Off Campus

In this recent post on Tufts’ Balance Your Life blog, Tufts students are schooled on how to eat healthy even when indulging in restaurant food. The blog is authored by Kate Sweeney, a Tufts alum and grad student at the Friedman School of Nutrition and Science Policy. Here are some of her recommendations for healthy ordering habits when eating out:

* Ask for sauces on the side (yes, even for your wings!)
* Go for mustard, hummus, or balsamic vinegar instead of mayo or creamy dressing
* Ask for no cheese, or limit it to one slice
* Get the whole-wheat bun or bread
* Substitute lean meats, like turkey and chicken, for beef
* Spruce it up with avocado, roasted red peppers, and spinach
* Set on fries instead of a side salad? See if a restaurant has sweet potato fries. Sweet potatoes are packed with potassium and other nutrients.

Jumbos in Balance

The Balance Your Life blog is penned by Kate Sweeney (A’11), a Tufts graduate student at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. Balance Your Life is a healthy lifestyle campaign from the Department of Health Education at Tufts, and seeks to “improve nutrition, increase physical activity, and improve overall wellbeing of undergrads at Tufts.” You can like the campaign on Facebook to get more updates.

In a recent entry, Sweeney writes:

During my four years at Tufts, I made both beneficial and poor health choices. For instance, I maintained a routine workout schedule for most of the school year by being on the varsity swim team and I ate vegetables almost every day (my mom taught me well). But, I also regularly ordered Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar® ice cream from Espressos and ate pretty poorly during times of stress (late-night pizza, soda, and snacks).
