Paul Summergrad, the Dr. Francis S. Arkin Professor and chair of psychiatry at the medical school, has been named president-elect of the 33,000-member American Psychiatric Association, poised to be the leader that members want to help guide them through a time
of transformation in the nation’s health-care landscape and psychiatric practice in particular. He will become president in May 2014.

A graduate of the School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Summergrad is board-certified in internal medicine, psychosomatic medicine and geriatric psychiatry. He said he was “deeply honored” by the selection. In an interview with Psychiatric News, he called for a “sustained and searching national dialogue about mental health.”
