Director of Education & Programming [Waukesha County Museum]

The Waukesha County Museum is currently seeking a Director of Education & Programming to lead, develop, and grow its educational and programming initiatives as we implement a new strategic plan over the next few years. This exciting position will play a key role in developing engaging education programs and events that both educate and entertain a wide variety of audiences. Proven experience developing successful educational programs geared toward varied audiences from youth to seniors is needed. Experience developing new start-up programs that have gained grant support would be a plus. We are seeking an individual with energy, creative ideas, and an engaging public personality. This position will serve as the main “face” to schools, educators, community outreach programs, and guided tours within the museum. An understanding of state curriculum guidelines and contacts within educational institutions would be helpful. Experience successfully leading adult committees and education task forces to common goals is a plus.

Educator [New England Aquarium]

AVAILABLE: Immediately

HOURS: Part Time (less than 20 hours per week)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Educator will join a team of up to 20 other Educators that work within the Education Department to present a variety of aquatic-themed educational programs in an outreach format, on-site in our Ocean Center, and in the Aquarium exhibits to children of various ages, the general public, and Aquarium members. Programming aims to increase an understanding of aquatic life and environments, strengthen scientific concepts and skills, and provide leadership for the preservation and sustainable use of aquatic resources. Programming formats generally vary between classroom style teaching (up to 30 participants), auditorium style (on a stage in front of up to 150 people), open house style (drop-in activities at 1 or 2 tables), and exhibit interpretation. Some programs will include live animals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Presents New England Aquarium programs across New England. Carries, transports, loads, and unloads all supplies and equipment needed for the programs. When applicable, maintains marine organisms and observes animal health during programs. May be responsible for transporting and supervising teen interns during out-of-school-time outreaches. Programming includes:
    1. Outreach to schools & daycare centers
    2. Outreach to member’s homes for birthday parties
    3. Outreach to community centers and after school sites
    4. Outreach/ on-site private & promotional events
    5. Outdoor programming with school groups & families at a field site
    6. On-site classes for school groups, families and members 2 years – 18 years
    7. On-site drop-in programming for public
  2. Assists the Visitor Education team in delivering high quality programming and informal interactions with a range of visitors in the Aquarium’s exhibits. Interact and mentor volunteers, interns and teen staff in their role as interpreters.
  3. Assists the Education Department in other program areas such as Aquarium Lectures, Teacher Resource Center, Harbor Discoveries Camp, etc. as assigned.
  4. Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Training & Experience

Requires Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (2-3 years) with an emphasis on life science, environmental science, or education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Required:

  • Massachusetts’s driver’s license, comfortable driving a 15 passenger van. Clean driving record.
  • Basic knowledge and interest in marine biology or local field habitats.
  • Comfortable handling marine organisms.
  • Comfortable interpreting and presenting on marine science topics in the Aquarium.
  • Able to work with people of diverse ages, interests, and backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable taking initiative and working with minimal supervision.

Preferred (any combination of the following):

  • Experience working with early childhood (ages 2 through 8).
  • Experience in public speaking and/or theater.
  • Experience supervising teen or adult volunteers or training staff.
  • Summer camp background or experience teaching in the field.
  • Knowledge of Boston neighborhoods, Boston Public Schools, and/or Boston afterschool centers.
  • Fluency in a language other than English (preferred: Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Creole, ASL).
  • Experience working with English Language Learners and/or special needs audiences.
  • First Aid, CPR, or higher life saving certification.

POSITION SUMMARY

Coordinates public education experiences, programs and events serving teen audiences at the High Museum of Art.

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm with some evenings and weekends as assigned.

*Schedule will change, on average, twice per month to accommodate evening and weekend programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

*         Coordinates the planning and implementation of public programs and events for teens. For example: teen nights, youth art exhibitions, art labs and classes, artist demonstrations, and musical, dance, and theatrical performances.

*         Develops and implements studio classes related to the High’s permanent collection and special exhibitions for teen afterschool and weekend drop-in workshops, and registration based studio programs.

*         Creatively produces teen night art events and college night events featuring activities, performances, and workshops drawn from content in the High’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.

*         Oversees, with the Assistant Director of Education, all contractual art teachers in the museum studios, supply inventory and ordering, and is a contact person for registration-based studio classes, workshops.

*         Communicates and coordinates honoraria contracts, travel arrangements, and billing as related to teen programs.

*         Researches and develops community artist contacts and maintains current network of relevant artists and performers (artists, musicians, theater, etc.).

*         Develops strong relationships with area organizations serving teens, community artists, and teachers and administrators as related to teen recruitment and messaging outreach.

*         Participates in planning meetings; learns about exhibitions and special projects that influence program development.

*         Researches program themes, artists, performers, and program formats and keeps informed about other programs locally and in other museums.

*         Develops and edits program copy for newsletter, flyers and other media as required.

*         Works with Coordinator of Public Programs to secure teaching artists and studio art components as needed.

*         Works with Coordinator of Docent Volunteer Educators to secure volunteers for programs as needed.

*         Works with AV tech, Visitor Services, Housekeeping, Security, Special Events, and other support staff to produce programs.

*         Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

*         B.A. or B.F.A. in Art History, Studio Art, Theater or Humanities.

*         M.A. in Art Education, Museum Education or M.F.A. in Studio Art preferred.

*         At least 3 years experience working with youth/teens in an art museum, classroom, or cultural setting.

*         Proven track record with youth program development.

*         Must be a creative educator with a passion for youth education.

*         Strong organizational and program coordination experience.

Skills/Abilities:

*         Must be a team player with an ability to work with a variety of contractors, artists, and staff.

*         Ability to network, identify and cultivate program partners/resources in the community.

Museum: new family museum based on areas of the arts (visual and performing) and the environment (including ecology) in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Purpose of position: to set up, manage and develop the department of learning and outreach. Part of the Museum’s senior staff; reports to Museum Director.

Responsibilities: include but are not limited to:
*      Oversea and manage the learning and outreach staff, and Museum learning programs both on- and off-site.
*      With HR department hire, train and develop education staff; deliver all required staff evaluations.
*      Develop and deliver staff professional development.
*      Develop with staff the Museum’s programs for families, children, schools, teachers (current and trainee), community groups and those with special/additional needs; initiate program evaluation protocols and procedures; contribute to educational materials.

Position requirements:  minimum masters degree in museum studies, museum education, life-long learning, or closely related subject; minimum 5 years museum management experience including management of staff and budget; (minimum 10 years total museum experience); experience with in-gallery programming for families and/or children; computer literate with excellent written, presentation and communication skills. International work experience highly desirable.
