Coordinator of Tours and Family Programs
The Coordinator of Tours and Family Programs is responsible for organizing the training and management of volunteer docents and freelance educators as well as the administration of group tours for school, adult, and self-guided audiences. In addition, the Coordinator of Tours and Family Programs develops written materials for different tour and family audiences, cultivates audience relationships, and contributes to the training of frontline staff, such as Security and Visitor Services, as needed.
The Coordinator of Tours and Family Programs oversees First Saturdays for Families and plays a lead role, along with key Education staff members, in organizing the annual New Museum Block Party.
The position is 40 hours/week, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend days required, including first Saturdays of each month and weekend group tour coverage as needed. Reports to the Associate Director of Education and works closely with other Education and New Museum staff, including Visitor Services, Security/Operations, and External Affairs.
- Implement strategic and operational plan of First Saturdays for Families, including planning of workshop, management of freelance and docent staff, and coordinating event with Operations and Visitor Services staff
- Oversee recruitment, training, management, teaching development, and scheduling of approximately 15 docents and 2 freelance educators Produce and coordinate exhibition-focused written materials related to group tours and family audiences
- Facilitate schedules and bookings through VISTA system
- Provide exhibition-related resources to teaching staff and manage tour development;
- Maintain an active roster of tour clients including tour operators, schools, colleges and universities, and community organizations
- Lead participation in planning and execution of annual New Museum Block Party, including securing venue permits, recruiting and overseeing staffing, and developing program events
- Supervise and manage interns and work study students in related programs
- Work with Marketing and External Affairs staff to promote Tours and Family
Programs through press and community outreach
- Work with the Associate Director of Education to design and implement programmatic evaluation
- Collaborate on special projects, including community outreach and professional development for teachers workshops as needed
- Oversee the short- and long-term development and strategic planning for Tours and Family Programs; represent the needs and interests of family, tour, and docent audiences in related department and museum-wide initiatives
The qualified candidate will have 2-5 years work experience in museum education and gallery interpretation; experience and familiarity with programming related to contemporary art; experience creating arts related curricula for youth and adult audiences; and a commitment to working with diverse populations. S/he should have management experience; strong oral and written communications skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop; and be highly organized.
An M.A. in Art Education, Art History, Humanities or related field preferred.
