Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is embarking on an exciting reorganization of the way it goes about its work and engages with the public. We have posted a position that would be one of three leadership positions in framing the public experience at the museum.
The (Asst./Assoc.) Curator or Director of Visitor Experience provides key leadership for all visitor experiences in the public spaces of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. As a senior member of the Center for Lifelong Science Learning’s management team, this position is responsible for shaping new directions for visitor experiences, defining programmatic approaches, identifying funding strategies and designing engaging roles for adult and teen docent programs. New initiatives align with the museum’s strategic goal to provide relevant experiences grounded in the core research and collections of the institution, with special attention to strategies that make the content physically, socially and intellectually available for a wide range of public audiences, including groups, families, students and adults who visit the museum. Uses of mobile technologies and social networking to enhance the
visitor’s learning experience before, during and after a visit are of great interest.
Requirements: Organized, flexible with excellent leadership skills; knowledge in communicating natural history topics to public audiences; ability to evaluate program implementation and provide professional development support to a wide range of staff.
-A MS or PhD in a scientific field or field related to the research and collections of the museum, preferred
- Three years professional experience in management of informal learning experiences; facilitation of professional development experiences; program partnerships; program management of budgets and reporting;
-Experience in the development of funding proposals and development and implementation of resulting activities.
-Three years experience managing youth and adult staff and associated program operations, especially with under-represented audiences (African American, Hispanic, Native American, young people from low-income backgrounds, girls, and people with disabilities).
-Evaluation or design based research with a history of publication in academic or professional journals.
-The option for a curator title requires a PhD in learning science or education and an agenda for related research.
-Research history, with publications in academic journals.
- Informal Science Experiences similar to those described above.
Salary Range commensurate with experience. Two year position, renewable contingent upon funding.
