Adult Programs Manager [Brooklyn Museum]

POSITION Description: Adult Programs Manager
DEPARTMENT: Education Division, Brooklyn Museum

RESPONSIBILITIES: The manager of Adult Programs develops and implements creative interpretive programs for adult museum visitors. Programs include lectures, film and video series, performing arts programs, educational workshops and new initiatives to reach a diverse audience. Successful candidate will be encouraged to try new formats for programs that engage audiences in looking at art and use museum resources in innovative ways. Most programs are planned for weekends, including Target First Saturdays, plus Thursday and Friday evenings. The Manager sets long term goals and determines priorities for the department in conjunction with the Vice Director for Education and Program Development, and other members of the Education staff. The manager is responsible for establishing budgets, and working with Development to write/develop fundraising proposals. The Manager will collaborate with staff throughout the museum including the curatorial, development, public information, editorial, and design departments. The manager will supervise a staff of three full time coordinators, and two full
time temporary paid interns. The Manager reports directly to the Vice Director for Education and Program Development. Production of events will require working weekends and evenings throughout the year.

REQUIREMENTS: Successful candidate should have MA in art history or related field and at least 3 years of program experience in museum or related institution. Candidate should have experience conceptualizing and producing innovative museum and community related programs for adult audiences. Experience and serious interest in reaching local community audiences is crucial. Candidate should have excellent general knowledge of art history, performing arts and film. Management of projects and personnel and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with museum staff at all levels in necessary. Excellent writing and research skills are essential. Willingness to work some evenings and weekends is critical. Demonstrable experience in budgeting, supervising staff, and grant writing are also important.

*Position Description:*

The New York City Urban Park Rangers seek naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts who want to spend their summer working with the public to build park stewardship and to act as ambassadors for New York City¹s vast greenspace.  As an *Urban Park Ranger Fellow*, you will work outdoors in flagship parks in the greatest city in the world in all five boroughs. Under supervision, Urban Park Fellows will spend part of their day patrolling frequented paths helping the public appreciate the natural and historical elements of our parklands, and providing general information and a uniformed presence.  Fellowship Rangers also provide nature- and history-themed educational programs at playgrounds and other high activity sites throughout the day.  Fellowship Rangers will be uniformed and trained to use a radio for communication, and to promptly respond to quality of life issues. Fellowship Rangers work 40 hours per week, including weekends.

*Length of position: Approximately June 19 through August 20.*

Collections Manager [International Spy Museum]

The International Spy Museum seeks a part-time Collections Manger (16 hours/week) to develop, manage, and oversee the collection of 2,000+ artifacts. Responsible for maintaining all records, communicating with potential donors, responding to requests for collection images and to public inquiries. Regularly cleans artifacts/cases and assists Exhibitions Production Manager in the upkeep of the Museum¹s exhibitions. Identifies conservation issues and oversees maintenance. Processes incoming and outgoing loans. Works with Historian to research and identify artifacts that will enhance the permanent collection. Develops and maintains relationships with donors and lenders.  Position requires regular early morning work and flexible time schedule with occasional need to work extended hours/days.

Minimum Education Required
MA in museum studies/Collections Management, administration, or related
experience.

Minimum Experience Required
Two years experience with collections management and registration. Interest in/experience with educational programming.  Proficient in Word, Past Perfect, Excel, Access, MS Office software, desk-top publishing, email, and Internet.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Senior Professional Development and Curriculum Associate for the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project is an experienced educator and professional development provider who has had experience in both creating effective learning experiences for teachers and designing high-quality curricular materials (print and media) for students. S/he will develop and offer introductory EiE and integrative STEM workshops for teachers as well as create materials to support other teacher educators, as well as students. S/he will develop and meet timelines, review and revise draft materials, and contribute to the brainstorming and development of new materials. S/he is also expected to network both inside the Museum and across the state and nation, generate new ideas for curricular resources, make presentations, and help with research and evaluation efforts. Finally s/he is expected to contribute to a productive environment that functions as a healthy and supportive team.

DIMENSIONS:

– Work with Engineering is Elementary project that involves about 10 programs/initiatives, with 14 staff, with spending approximately $2M/year.

– The EiE program currently has reached over 1.7M students and 22,000 teachers in all 50 states.

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENTS:

1. Work with the EiE Project Manager and the PD Manager to create professional development and curricular resources. S/he will take leadership on designing PD resource materials and/or curriculum materials, develop plans and timelines for resource development, engage in materials testing, and critique and revise existing products. Work with the EiE Content Development, Research and Assessment, and Professional Development teams to produce exceptional products and services.

2. Design and offer professional development sessions and materials .

3. Create materials, products, and services that are conceptually aligned with the EiE philosophy. Produce finished products that meet the goals of the EiE project.

4. Lead and nurture productive, supportive project teams. Mentor less experienced staff members.

5. Disseminate the EiE program and its products through presentations, written documents, workshops, and national conferences to reach potential clients, prospective funders, possible partners, interested educators, and others.

6. Help connect various initiatives of the project so that content and pedagogical strategies remain consistent and connected. These include professional development workshops and resources, additional multimedia (web, video) resources, exhibition resources, research and evaluation, and supplementary curricular resources.

7. Help cultivate relationships with implementation partners, new professional development partners, new “expert” reviewers and organizational partners, and new teacher and school district partners.

8. Manage and cultivate relationships inside the Museum with people and projects that might inform or collaborate with the EiE project. This includes other curricular programs as well as programs and exhibitions.

9. Be actively engaged in generating new ideas for resources and help write grant proposals.

10. Perform other work-related duties as required by Manager.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Grant-funded, full-time. Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week.

REPORTS TO:

Manager, Engineering is Elementary (EiE)

Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s of Science or Arts and additional course work preferred.

– 3 to 5 years of experience preferred.

– Demonstrated project management skills and organization.

– Understanding of engineering and science concepts. Also, must have understanding of effective science pedagogy. Ability to communicate these concepts to teachers as well as put elementary teachers at ease through strong presentation and teaching skills.

– Experience teaching students and/or teachers in formal or informal settings.

– Experience teaching in an elementary school classroom preferred.

– Knowledge of curriculum, science, teachers, districts, and the K-12 educational system.

– Experience writing curricular materials or lesson plans.

– Strong collaborative skills.

– Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

– Ability to professionally represent the project and Museum and to form and manage partnerships.

– Ability to take initiative and work independently.

– Very good data management skills and facility with computers .

– Close attention to detail and timelines.

– Ability to work as a team member, mentor others, and assume leadership.

– Ability to travel an average of 3-5 days a month is required. This is non-negotiable.

Collections Manager [The Bostonian Society]

The Bostonian Society seeks an experienced Collections Manager, to be the primary caretaker responsible for the long-term care and strategic planning of its extensive artifact collection.

In cooperation with the Society’s Archivist, the Collections Manager will conduct a collections assessment, and develop recommendations for the future of the collection.

The Collections Manager will also serve on the Society’s Old State House reinterpretation team, working to improve the visitor experience through traditional and new media.

Other responsibilities will include: administering incoming and outgoing loans; cataloging and re-housing objects; managing the collections database and object files; maintaining collections storage, and regulating climate control and pest management in storage and exhibition areas; providing routine maintenance of the Society’s current exhibitions; providing access to the collection for researchers; and responding to other reference requests.

Required qualifications include: a Certificate or Master’s Degree in history, museum studies, or related field, or equivalent experience managing museum collections; customer service skills; history research skills; familiarity with best practices in collections care; knowledge of collections database software; and strong organizational skills also required. Other experience is preferred in: artifact accessioning and deaccessioning; exhibition planning, object preparation, fabrication, and display techniques; supervision of interns; interacting with donors; preparing grant proposals; and public speaking. Physical ability to work in a three-story, historic structure without elevators; must be able to carry artifacts, exhibit cases, and fabrication supplies up and down stairs.
