Interpretation Manager [Amon Carter Museum of American Art]

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art seeks an Interpretation Manager to
join its nationally recognized Education team. Specializing in the knowledge
of visual art, the Interpretation Manager’s combined skills as an educator,
editor, writer, and project manager place him/her at the center of the Amon
Carter’s interpretation of works of art-both at the museum and virtually.
The Interpretation Manager develops, coordinates, implements, manages, and
evaluates a broad range of interpretive strategies and materials designed
for use by visitors of all ages and abilities to explore and understand the
Amon Carter’s collections and special exhibitions.

Responsibilities include:

*   Advocate for the interests of the museum’s diverse audiences and the
significant role of education within all special exhibitions and collection
installations both in the museum and online.
*   Work collaboratively with staff from Curatorial and Education
departments to develop and evaluate interpretative goals and strategies for
the museum’s collections and exhibitions that will facilitate extraordinary
art experiences for museum visitors.
*   Recommend and prioritize interpretative formats and strategies based on
current knowledge of audience engagement, museum education, and technology.
*   Assemble and manage teams from Collections, Curatorial, Education,
Marketing, Information Technology, and Publications staff who will help
develop or recommend content for a wide selection of interpretive materials.
*   Collaborate with various departments to plan and manage the production
of multimedia resources, including videos, audio guides, and web components.
Write and evaluate interpretive content for the museum’s collections and
special exhibitions, including, but not limited to, brochures and other
printed guides, signage, participatory spaces, web resources, and in-gallery
technology applications.
*   Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate interpretive materials for
specialized audiences, including families, educators, and young audiences.
*   Review and edit text panels and object labels for the permanent
collection and special exhibitions to ensure adherence to museum guidelines,
content goals, and audience understanding and reading level.
*   Work with the Director of Education and the Director of Development to
secure funding opportunities for interpretative resources and ensure that
all funding stipulations are fulfilled.

Qualifications

*   MA degree in art history, art museum education, or American studies;
(emphasis in American art a plus).
*   Minimum two years of museum education, interpretation, or curatorial
experience required.
*   Demonstrated ability to make scholarly information accessible to
various audiences, including the general public, families, and educators.
*   Substantial experience writing and editing for a general audience.
*   Commitment to working as part of a collaborative team.
*   Diplomatic, analytical, well organized, and able to meet strict
deadlines while working on several concurrent projects.
*   Possess innovative ideas about museum interpretation and knowledge of
art history.
*   Familiarity with museum education theory and trends and in electronic
media and technology.

Fall Research and Evaluation Intern [Museum of Science Boston]

Description:

The Visitor Research and Evaluation Department at the Museum of Science supports the development of educational programs and exhibitions at the Museum by soliciting feedback from visitors during the development process and by conducting research about museum learning.

Position Summary:

This internship provides interns with the opportunity to learn about visitor research and evaluation through on-the-job training and development. Interns will become familiar with the tools and methods that provide effective and ineffective learning experiences by observing and interviewing visitors as they interact with the museum’s programs and exhibits. Efforts will be made to provide the intern with the opportunity to experience all aspects of conducting a visitor study.

Responsibilites:

– Conduct unobtrusive observations, interviews, and/or surveys of museum visitors.

– Enter data collected from museum visitors.

– Analyze data collected.

– Perform literature reviews about topics relevant to the study.

Qualifications:

– Undergraduate/graduate student (Museum Studies/Education students encouraged to apply).

– Outgoing, willing to talk to visitors.

– Familiarity with the Museum preferred.

Length of Internship:

Fall 2011 (September/October – December)

Work Schedule:

14 hours/week (two full 7 – hour days per week).

Salary Range:

8.00 – 8.25/hour

Education Specialist [National Museum of American History]

Education Specialist

The National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, is seeking a
well-rounded Education Specialist to help design and present teacher professional
development programs as part of the Museum’s national outreach to K-12 teachers.
Duties will include researching and writing teacher professional development
materials, teaching live workshops both in person and online, developing learning
activities, creating content for the Museum’s social media channels, and coordinating
partnerships with school districts as well assisting the project team with logistics and
administrative tasks. The position will require approximately one week of travel per
month to sites across the United States.

Applicants must demonstrate:

Skill and experience in teaching both small and large groups of learners
(especially adult learners.)

Skill and experience in researching and writing educational materials such
as: lesson plans, learning activities, interactives, short audio-video scripts or
Web-based educational content.

Knowledge of current learning theories and K-12 teaching practices in
the classroom and online, as well as the daily challenges and professional
development needs of educators.

Knowledge of the range of interactive technologies and their potential use for
educational programming.

Knowledge of social media and online communications practices.

Experience serving as an effective member of a project team.

This is a full-time, 2-year non-federal position (renewable). Salary is $ 51,630.00

Exhibit Manager [Heritage Museums and Gardens]

Heritage Museums & Gardens, in historic Sandwich, MA, on Cape Cod, seeks an experienced Exhibit Manager. The successful candidate will have a track record of creation and involvement with engaging, visitor driven exhibits. Candidates will demonstrate the ability to manage all aspects of exhibits work, including planning, scheduling, communication with designers and contractors, installation and deinstallation, and maintenance of exhibits on view. Hands on and conceptual/creative skills required. Familiarity with latest trends in the field, a desire to create memorable, emotionally moving exhibits desired. MA in design, American history, art history, or related field and at least 2 years exhibit experience required.
