Chief Educator [Intrepid Air & Space Museum]

Chief Educator, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America’s leading historic,
cultural and educational institutions. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored
aboard the former USS Intrepid, a national historic landmark, has welcomed
more than 10 million visitors and currently welcomes almost one million
visitors annually. The Museum’s mission is “to honor our heroes, educate
the public and inspire our youth.” The Museum pursues this mission through
a dynamic and enriching exhibition environment recounting human stories
behind the machinery on display in relation to the service era of the
Intrepid: in World War II, the Cold War, NASA recovery missions and three
tours in Vietnam. In connection thereto, the Museum delivers a broad range
of credible, innovative, and engaging educational programs supplementing
classroom learning in history, science, and leadership as well as extensive
public and proprietary programs honoring those who serve our country — all
to inspire our youth.

levels within the Museum, especially the Chief Curator, who represents the
exhibits team and the Assistant Vice President for Education who represents
the education team, in order to develop a long range vision and direction
for the Museum’s educational programming.

He or she must be an effective manager and team member who can work in a
dynamic and collaborative environment. As a senior team member, he or she
must understand how each area of the Museum interrelates with the other
areas and the importance of this collaboration to the overall success of
the Museum. Additionally, he or she must know how to manage budgets, be
conversant with current technologies, be comfortable in public

Internship [Childs Gallery]

Internship Opportunity

Childs Gallery is looking for an intern who is able to work 2-3 times a week for 4-8 hours at a time. The length and hours of the internship can be tailored to the individual needs of the intern. We strongly prefer a commitment of at least 2 days a week, preferably the same days each week, from January-June. The intern is expected to be on time, ready to work and with a neat, professional appearance. The internship would follow through the summer.

The intern will help in assisting the Operations department by imaging works, housing of art, some cataloguing and research, and various other tasks pertaining to general organization and helping with upcoming exhibitions.

Intern should arrive with a commitment to the internship. Although unpaid, such an internship can help in establishing credentials for an entry level position working in the field of older American and European works of art as a career. Major or minor
concentration in studio art or art history is not necessary (although preferred), however a sincere interest in learning about art and the art business is. Attention to detail and a desire to work with art hands-on are essential qualities for the prospective intern.

To apply, please submit a resume and detailed cover letter explaining your interest in the internship to Caroline Stevens, caroline@childsgallery.com

Established in 1937 on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back
Bay, Childs Gallery holds one of the largest inventories of oil
paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints and sculpture in the
United States. Our extensive holdings of prints and drawings
range from Old Masters like Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya and
Piranesi to Whistler and all the 20th century notables, along
with superb paintings and sculpture from the past 200 years.
Though Childs is widely known for a fine and
comprehensive collection of American Impressionism, our
current holdings also reflect the changing tastes of our
clients, with a renewed emphasis on Mid-Century American
Modernism and Social and Magic Realism.

Internship Opportunities [Art Beyond Sight]

Art Beyond Sight, a remarkable organization that works on art education for the visually impaired, has two potential projects for interns. Neither requires a move to New York City; both can be done remotely.

1. White Papers on Access and Inclusion: We are looking for a person who will coordinate the production of a series of short white papers. The person will be expected to communicate with authors, traffic materials, and oversee deadlines, format, and content. This is a very part-time engagement for a six-month period. Some prior publishing or editorial experience is preferred. The person will be credited on these white papers as an editorial coordinator. A small stipend will be provided.
2. Museum Accessibility Study: Participating in and taking notes on six to eight telephone interviews we will be conducting with staff at small U.S. museums following their having held focus groups with people with vision loss; reviewing short online surveys from these people; and then writing reports based on their notes from the phone conversations and the survey. A small stipend will be provided.

Re the Museum Accessibility Study: As an earlier part of this project, we conducted seven focus groups with adults with vision loss in 2010. The Museum of Science, Boston’s Research and Development Department staff evaluated the material from those sessions. Our joint report, SPEAKING OUT ON ART AND MUSEUMS: Study on the Needs and Preferences of Adults who Are Blind or Have Low Vision, is on our Website. Here is a direct link to it, should you wish to share the findings with your students: http://www.artbeyondsight.org/new/speaking-out-on-art-and-museums.shtml.

If you are interested in either of these internships, send your resume on to Art Beyond Sight: http://www.artbeyondsight.org/sidebar/contact.shtml.
