Responsibilities & Duties:

This position assists with all operations and programming to implement the

full calendar of public programs. This position is split equally between
general

public programs and coordinating the Margaret Mead Film Festival. This

position is the main coordinator for the Margaret Mead Film Festival.
Specific

tasks include, but are not limited to:

€ Researching and requesting possible films for festival, and researching

potential program speakers and resources for exhibition-related

programming

€ Overseeing and coordinating entire festival submission process

including: creating and disseminating guidelines and entry forms,

maintaining festival database, previewing and reviewing festival entries

€ Manage all aspects of Mead Traveling Festival

€ Training festival and public programs volunteers and interns. This

includes: database training, film trafficking, marketing and promotions,

etc.

€ Coordinating all guests speaker and filmmaker needs which often

involves continuous communication.

€ Gathering/compiling of assets for festival program and other

supplementary documents

€ Coordinate all technical aspects of the festival.

Managing, processing, and tracking Mead Festival and Mead Traveling

Festival budgets

€ Coordinating internal and external advance logistics for programs

€ Coordinating day-to-day relationship with A/V, Photo Studio, and

Institutional Advancement

€ Stage management and day-of support for programs

€ Researching potential funding opportunities and in-kind donations

This position sits within the Public Programs division of the Education

Department, and reports to the Senior Manager of Public Programs.

Qualifications:

This position requires someone with exceptional organizational skills and
the

ability to juggle many tasks. Candidates must excel in time management,

writing, and verbal communication.  Bachelor¹s Degree required.

€ Knowledge of international documentary film and film history

€ Interested in all aspects of public programming, from adult lectures to

family workshops to non-festival film screenings

€ Extensive knowledge of current audio visual technology and exhibition

standards

€ At least 2 years experience working with film festivals or public

programs and events

€ Excellent written and oral communication skills

€ Highly organized and detail oriented

€ Team player who can juggle multiple projects and work well under tight

deadlines

€ Ability to work some nights/weekends a must
€ Proficiency in using MS Excel and FileMaker Pro

A part of the Education department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the
School Programs division is the liaison between the museum and elementary
through high public and private schools, and state and local teacher and
education organizations.  Working with a team of educators, this position
plans and implements professional development programs for educators,
researches and writes curriculum materials, and works collaboratively with
the MFAH¹s Kinder Foundation Education Center, a lending-library of
teaching resources.  The primary goals of the School Programs division is
to develop educator and school partnerships and other initiatives that
position the museum as a center for teaching and learning for educators and
students.

Responsibilities:

– Plan, implement, and evaluate professional development programs for
educators including Evenings for Educators, teacher workshops, an annual
teacher conference, a summer course for teachers, and special requests
– Plan, implement, and evaluate select programs for elementary ­ high
school students
– Research and write select curriculum materials on the permanent
collection and exhibitions
– Research and understand the needs, interests, and concerns of
public/private school educators and administrators to ensure the MFAH¹s
offerings are relevant and reflect best practice in teaching and learning
– Oversee the development and distribution of an online newsletter,
announcements, and other marketing material that seek to maximize
participation in museum activities to maintain existing and develop new
audiences
– Works with others in education department to manage budgets, grant
reports, program statistics,

and other administrative responsibilities as necessary

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

– Proficient gallery and/or classroom teacher
– Excellent management and interpersonal skills
– Familiar with current education theories and trends
– Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage numerous
projects simultaneously
– Must be able to work evenings and weekends as program schedule demands

Education and Experience:

– MA., M.Ed., or MAT in art education, art history or education
– 3-5 years experience in museum education or classroom teaching
– Demonstrated management and administrative abilities
– Experience teaching from works of art

The Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust is seeking an intern for either spring or summer, 2012 to develop a collections management policy for the organization.  The Wakefield Trust promotes life-long participatory learning using the land and resources of the Wakefield estate in Milton, MA.   Through collaborative partnerships with schools and community organizations, the Wakefield Trust carries out this mission by providing educational opportunities, tours, presentations, workshops, hands-on training, internships and other programs covering a variety of subjects, including local history, ecology, horticulture, agriculture, archival work and historic preservation. Through fostering the connections between people, land and history, the Wakefield Charitable Trust aims to create a living and accessible landscape that carries on the legacy of founder Polly Wakefield and her vision for an engaged and knowledgeable citizenry.

Polly Wakefield was the last of a long line of prominent family members who occupied a large mansion house in Milton.  When she passed away in 2004 she left the house, outbuildings, and contents to the trust.  The family amassed a large collection of furniture, paintings and decorative arts in the 250 years it occupied the estate.  The contents of this house and its outbuildings form the collections of the institution.

Activities the Intern will be involved in include:

Drafting a Collections Management Plan for the Mary Wakefield Charitable Trust

Researching plans in use by similar institutions

Presenting policies and documents to an advisory board for approval and

Producing a timeline of the project with goals and objectives

Producing a short report at the end of the internship summarizing the project and its outcomes

Visiting other area museums for a chance to see behind the scenes

The Mary Wakefield Charitable Trust in Milton, MA, is seeking an intern in the area of Collections Management for either spring or summer, 2012.  An intern will be selected according to experience, academic background, availability, aptitude, and the ability for the organization to match the intern with its current needs.  Valarie Kinkade, Principal of Museum and Collector Resource will act as the intern supervisor in the areas of curatorship and collections management.  Ms. Kinkade has over 30 years of experience in the museum field and is the owner of a consulting firm which specializes in collections related projects for a wide variety of museums.  Mark Smith, the Executive Director of the Mary Wakefield Trust will also supervise and advise the intern.

Activities the Intern will be involved in include:

Cataloguing a collection of items housed at the Mary Wakefield Trusts property in Milton, MA

Assisting in making curatorial decisions about what objects should be included in the collection

Consulting with the project supervisor to develop a list of supplies necessary to process the artifacts

Receiving instruction in object handling and re-housing artifacts according to museum standards

Receiving training in the organization’s collections management database (Past Perfect)

Making order out of chaos in sometimes dusty and cluttered conditions

Producing a short report at the end of the internship summarizing the project and its outcomes

Visiting other area museums with a chance to see behind the scenes and talk with staff members

Project Descriptions:

The collection to be processed is composed of textiles, including clothing, accessories and household furnishings dating from the mid 19th century through the 1970’s.  Every day is a little bit like the Antiques Roadshow in that you never know what you will find.

Preservation Internship [Newport Restoration Foundation]

Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) is a private, nonprofit preservation and museum organization. NRF operates three museum sites on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island – the Whitehorne House’s collection of early Newport furniture; Prescott Farm which provides glimpses into the island’s rural past complete with an 1812 windmill; and Rough Point, a Bellevue Avenue mansion with an impressive collection of fine and decorative arts.

Founded as a force for preservation, NRF has restored and maintains 72 houses from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as rental properties. For more information go to: www.newportrestoration.org .

Purpose of Internship:
To provide a high quality learning experience, that jointly fulfills the educational needs and interests of the intern as well as the requirements and goals of NRF. To support the activities of the Foundation, in particular the Education and Public Programs Department, in achieving the institution’s mission through public programs, interpretive planning, and other initiatives relating to NRF’s collection of artifacts, buildings and landscapes.

Function (Responsibility and Scope):
The intern will work directly with the Director of Education and Public Programs and other staff on a variety of projects in a position of responsibility, and carry out an individual project of importance to the museum. The internship will expand the intern’s knowledge of professional museum functions; build on the intern’s skills, experience and interests; and advance the institution’s interpretive plans and educational offerings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist the Director of Education and Public Programs in departmental initiatives and activities.

• Assist with the implementation of this season’s public programs. Examples include: group tours and workshops at Prescott Farm; Rough Point After Dark (Gallery Night) programs related to the exhibit’s global travelling theme; visiting craftsmen programs; and more. This position may include minor, short-term research project(s) for programs under development.

• Complete one or more projects, tailored to the student’s interests and NRF’s goals, in the areas of research, educational program development, or interpretive planning. Possibilities include:

– Food history research and writing, and transcription of an early 19th-century recipe book, in support of a potential publication.

– Editing digital video for educational clips on the web (YouTube, NRF’s website, etc.) and in the galleries.

– Conducting intensive research on a group of NRF’s 18th-century houses.

– Researching and writing tip sheets and web link annotations on preservation topics in support of:
www.commonsensepreservation.org and www.newportrestoration.org/sup/files/hh_tool_kit.pdf

– Developing school program curriculum or special thematic tour scripts on art or decorative arts (related to our museum collections) or on the American Revolution.

Compensation and Living Arrangements:
Compensation will be $13.25/hour for 10 to 12 weeks (or $5,300). Housing is available in one of NRF’s restored 18th-century houses at $125 or $250/month, possibly shared with one other intern. Scheduling for the internship will be arranged with the Director of Education and Public Programs: start & end dates are flexible; some weekend and evening hours will be required. Intern must provide own transportation.
