Historic New England seeks a site manager for Roseland Cottage in Woodstock, Conn. and
Merwin House in Stockbridge, Mass. Based at Roseland Cottage, the site manager is responsible for the management and marketing of both sites and serves as Historic New England’s liaison to the communities, operating the museums in conjunction with other Historic New England teams and within procedures established by headquarters in Boston. The primary goals of the site manager are to provide the greatest public access to the sites through museum initiatives that conform to site preservation standards and to meet the revenue and attendance targets set by the organization. The Roseland Cottage site manager develops, promotes, implements, and evaluates innovative interpretive and educational public programs; manages the museum tour operation and museum shop; coordinates with development staff to identify and secure local funding; develops and manages site budgets. The Roseland Cottage site manager is also responsible for the supervision of museum guides, landscape staff, and an active volunteer corps. Qualifications: Bachelors degree in a relevant field, preferably in American History, art or cultural history, historic preservation, or museum studies. Two years job-related experience required; four years preferred. Ability to work independently, solve problems, and multi-task. Familiarity with team approach. Alexandria, VA office.  The Research Associate will be responsible for
implementing a diverse range of evaluation projects and services;
coordinating data collection logistics; developing evaluation tools;
collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; and preparing
reports and presentations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to join a work environment
that is client-centered and pursues excellence in evaluation.  A master¹s
degree in applied anthropology, educational psychology, sociology,
educational measurement, museum education, museum studies, or evaluation,

Director of Education, The National Aviary: The National Aviary is the
nation’s only nonprofit, free-standing indoor facility wholly dedicated to
avian exhibition and conservation. With a mission to “inspire a respect for
nature through an appreciation of birds,” the organization is involved in a
host of activities ranging from citizen science to conservation research.
As a result of an $18.5 million expansion and renovation, the institution
has expanded its public programming from the traditional exhibit-based zoo
experience by adding unique visitor-centric avian interactions, including an
indoor free-flight bird show and an outdoor raptor exhibition. To lead this
effort, the National Aviary is seeking a Director of Education who will be
responsible for creating and implementing exciting and innovative education
programs that deliver the Aviary’s environmental messages to targeted
audiences across multiple platforms.  The Director of Education will be
responsible for (1) expanding existing education programs at the Aviary that
focus on pre-K through 12 school curricula; (2) developing additional
revenue-generating education programs targeted to audiences not currently
served by the National Aviary; (3) establishing collaborative relationships
with other local, regional, and national organizations interested in
conservation education; (4) developing curricula that can be used not only
within the institution, but be integrated into education programs at other
institutions; and (5) setting and achieving education revenue goals.  In
addition, the Director will work with the Development Department to identify
new sources for philanthropic support of Aviary education activities and to
the extent necessary, assist in donor cultivation and grant writing.
Critical qualifications for this position include a degree in education or
environmental education and training in the fundamentals of biology and
conservation biology; knowledge of and enthusiasm for presenting on avian
biology, behavior, habitat loss, human population size, resource consumption
and other subjects critical to avian conservation; a minimum of 2 years
experience in conservation or related public education; must be a leader and
a consensus builder within the National Aviary and with outside
organizations; excellent organizational and management skills; experience
working with birds is a “plus.”

The Forbes House Museum, Milton, MA, seeks a part-time Museum Educator/ Tour
Coordinator for its fast growing museum guide and group tour programs.
Responsibilities include designing interpretive experiences for school and
community groups, researching potential new audiences, recruiting and
training new museum guides, maintaining tour schedule,tracking visitor
attendance and demographics, and implementing tours.

Applicants must enjoy working with the public and have excellent
communication, interpersonal and organization skills. She/He should
enjoy working collaboratively with a small staff. Applicant must have
experience teaching in a classroom or museum setting and have
proficiency working with the public, including youth and family groups. The
position offers 12-15 hours per week with flexible hours; the applicant must
be available to work some weekends and evenings. The position is an
excellent opportunity for a creative, highly-motivated individual interested
in expanding the scope and value of the museum¹s tour program.

Qualifications: a B.A. in public history, education, museum education and/or

About the Forbes House Museum:

The Forbes House Museum, built in 1833, is a historic Greek revival mansion,
built for Margaret Perkins Forbes (1773­ 1856) by her sons, Captain Robert
Bennet Forbes (1804­ 1889), and John Murray Forbes (1813­ 1898). Captain
Forbes was an American China trade merchant, designer, writer and
philanthropist of international stature. Throughout the 19th century, the
Captain and his family were leaders in U. S. trade in Canton, establishing
the Boston-based Russell & Company. The Museum collection includes Chinese
export porcelain and silver, and American, European and Chinese paintings
and furniture. Mary Bowditch Forbes (1878­ 1962), granddaughter of the
Captain, collected President Lincoln memorabilia, and built a replica of
Lincoln¹s log cabin on the grounds of the estate. The Forbes House Museum is
located on Milton Hill, overlooking Boston city skyline, Neponset River
Marshes and Boston
Harbor. Tours of the Museum are available on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday

  • Participates on teams or with higher level staff in performing a wide variety of physical care projects for natural history collections including biological, geological, and anthropological and associated records (including registration records in any of its storage locations.)
  • Ensures projects result in properly documented, prepared, catalogued, curated, maintained and accessible collections according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Compiles, checks, verifies, and maintains data records created from source materials such as labels, specimen/objects, catalogs, data as necessary and records data on the appropriate forms, labels, other documents, or in computer systems as required by the data management process.
  • Tracks data through the data management process, proofreading data for technical errors and content, referring to original source documents as necessary; generates technical data such as specimen/object counts and collections item locations; operates various data-entry equipment.
  • Uses a variety of digitization techniques including, but not limited to, cameras, scanners and image editing software to prepare digital images and generate digital descriptive records of specimens for the purpose of documenting the museum’s natural history collection, to enhance the information content of  the museum’s catalog of record stored in a relational database.

Experience: You must have one year of full-time experience (Federal or other) at the GS-4 level that is related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. The experience for this position includes activities such as handling and maintaining natural science specimens, compiling and maintaining data records created from source materials such as labels, specimen/objects and catalogs and operating digital cameras, scanners and image editing software to prepared digital images of specimens. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: four years above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study  or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of study Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category – Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category – Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category – Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans’ preference points or apply the “rule of three”, but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
