Museum Educator, Early Childhood & Family Learning – Part Time

SUMMARY
The Rubin Museum of Art is a dynamic environment that stimulates learning,
promotes understanding, and inspires personal connections to the ideas,
cultures, and art of Himalayan Asia. Now in its eighth year, the museum
welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually and has over 6,000 members. The
museum’s preeminent collection includes works of art from present-day
Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the
Tibetan Plateau. The pace is lively with more than ten changing exhibitions
and more than 250 public programs a year.

Early Childhood and Family Learning at the Rubin Museum of Art incorporates
all family and early childhood (preschool) programs for school groups and
general public including: drop-in family workshops home school programs,
preschool group workshops, family days, birthday party workshops, and early
childhood and family resource development. The Museum Educator will work
with Education staff to gather and approve content for projects and develop
and implement programs. Program curricula will address overall Museum and
departmental goals.

RESPONSIBLITIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 Under the direction of the Manager of Early Childhood and Family Learning,
develop, document and implement programs such as Yak Packers, Family Art
Labs, Birthday Parties, Families Days, and Preschool Workshops.
 Collaborate with Education staff to develop curricula that complement the
Rubin Museum’s collection and help families, early childhood educators, and
early learners form authentic and personal connections to the art of the
Himalayas.
 Evaluate and revise lesson plans, art-projects, and the program
activities. Conduct assessment of program effectiveness through student work
and family interaction.
 Adapt curricula to specific early childhood populations.
 Coordinate schedules and collaborate with other museum educators and
teaching artists.
 Participate in trainings related to new exhibitions.
 Maintain and organize supply inventory and request supplies as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
 B.A. required, M.A./MS.Ed preferred (in Education, Early Childhood
Education, Art Education).
 Must have experience working with young children (2-6 years of age) and
families.
 Must be available to work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and some
Saturdays.

SALARY
 $13 per hour, commensurate with experience.
 20 hours per week.

DIRECTOR OF MUSEUM EDUCATION

JOB SUMMARY:

Direct all Museum education endeavors, including, but not limited to,
on-site and distance learning education programs, public and visitor
programs, outreach programs and the Frank and Peggy Steele Internship
Program.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

*           Direct Museum education, outreach, distance learning and
public programs and staff, promoting excellence in education to all
audiences

*           Manage, refine and develop curriculum and programs to
support and build on the Hall of Fame’s 17 units

*           Manage and grow the Hall of Fame’s “Be A Superior Example”
program, promoting healthy living

*           Serve as the director of the Frank and Peggy Steele
Internship Program, managing alumni network, student and donor
relationships and seminar and higher learning development elements of
national Internship program

*           Oversee budgets and track expenditures for the education,
Museum programs and Steele internship endeavors

*           Maintain relationships with and communication to Education
donors and chief constituents

*           Liaise with internal and national audiences to broaden the
Museum’s outreach efforts.

*           Present special event programs for the Museum, speak at
conferences and other educational events, promoting the components of
the Hall of Fame’s educational efforts

*           Cultivate partnerships with external academic and technology
resources to enhance the Museum’s education initiatives.

*           Target university collaborations and advance educational
efforts with post-secondary opportunities

*           Remain current with technological developments, teaching
practices and funding opportunities related to Museum education.

*           Organizes marketing materials and communications plans for
the Hall of Fame’s educational programs and outreach projects, including
Web site, e-news letters, and other collateral to promote initiatives.

*           Serve as the director of the Museum’s education staff,
including part-time teachers, to guide and shape administrative
responsibilities.

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

*           Provide communications support for Museum’s publications and
existing publicity initiatives

*           Fulfills Hall of Fame Weekend and Special Event duties as
assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree in education or a related field.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years in public education, museum
programming or a comparable leadership position.

ABILITIES: Excellent writing, editorial and verbal skills. Working
knowledge of Windows-based programs, including presentation and
publishing software. Highly organized, detail oriented and the ability
to manage people, projects and budgets effectively. Self motivated with
a high degrees of energy, enthusiasm and professionalism.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

*           Occasional travel and extended workdays, such as periodic
evenings and weekend events.

*           Effective communicator, with ability to address audiences in
all forms, oral and written, in-person and over the telephone.

TYPICAL EQUIPMENT USED:

Education Volunteer [Arlington Historical Society]

The Arlington Historical Society is seeking volunteers to assist
teaching our Education Program to local students visiting the Jason
Russell House and Smith Museum for their annual field trips. The ideal
candidate has museum experience, education experience, and/or art and
craft-making experience. Students pursuing Museum Education, Art
Education, Studio Art, Art History, History, or Museums Studies are
encouraged to apply. Must have a sense of humor and enjoy working with
active and boisterous third-graders.

Our Education Program will be taking place in October-November 2012
and April-May 2013. We anticipate 16-19 classes visiting throughout
the spring and at least 3 (on Oct. 31st, Nov. 1st, and Nov. 2nd) in
the fall. The hours are 8:30am ­ 12:30pm. Anticipated commitment would
be two to three times a week (Tuesday through Friday) during the
aforementioned months.

This is an ideal opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students
seeking hands-on museum or education experience without the commitment
of a full-time internship.

Tasks during the Education Program will include set-up, assisting with
tours and activities (including broom-making, dried fruit stringing,
and learning from our collection), and clean-up. Training on
activities and the program¹s structure will be provided.

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. The Arlington Historical
Society is easily accessible by public transportation and free parking
is available.

Public Program Coordinator [Vermont Historical Society]

Public Program Coordinator

General Description:
The Public Program Coordinator will be responsible for the development and implementation of public programs primarily for adults and families.  This is a full-time, permanent position with a Tuesday-Saturday work schedule.

Responsibilities:
?        Develop, implement and evaluate public programs for adults and family audiences that support the educational mission of the VHS.  Programs may be presented at the Vermont History Museum, the Vermont History Center or at other locations throughout Vermont.

•        Manage the biannual Vermont History Expo and support the coordination of regional expo events.

•        In coordination with the Curator, develop and implement programs and activities around VHS exhibitions at the Vermont History Museum and the Vermont History Center.

•        Ensure the continuity of operation of the Vermont History Museum by assuming primary responsibility for opening and closing the museum, scheduling and training front desk volunteers, and assisting at the front desk as needed.  In coordination with the Curator, assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the exhibits at the Vermont History Museum.

•        Assist the Education Coordinator in the implementation of school tours, home school programs and Vermont History Day activities.

•        Assist the Director of Development in the identification of funding opportunities to support public programming and the submission of requests for funding.

Relationships:
The Public Program Coordinator reports to the Curator and works collaboratively with other VHS staff, VHS committees, volunteers, and a wide range of partners locally, regionally, and nationally.

Environmental Factors:
?        Duties are performed in a standard office setting, based in both Montpelier and Barre, Vermont.

•        Certain duties will require heavy workloads and tight deadlines, especially in preparation for Vermont History Expo.

•        Moderate travel requirements may occur, for which a valid driver’s license is required and private means of transportation must be available.

•        Weekend and occasional evening work will be required.

Required Qualifications & Experience:
?        Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in history, museum studies, museum education or a related field.

•        Three or more years of related experience, preferably with a cultural heritage organization.

•        Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•        The ability to create and manage online programming resources.

•        The ability to professionally represent the Society’s mission, goals and programs.

•        Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to work with deadlines.

•        The ability to exercise good judgment with minimum supervision.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
?        Master’s degree or equivalent in history, museum studies, museum education or a related field is preferred.
