The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College seeks an energetic and qualified professional to work with the Head Registrar in all aspects of collections and exhibitions care and management.

Responsibilities will include specific duties in any of the following: maintaining collection records such as condition reports and object files, assisting with inventory, processing accessions and deaccessions, managing packing, shipping and other preparation for incoming and outgoing loans as well as in-house and traveling exhibitions.

This position works directly with faculty, students, and interns to provide access to the Tang collection and storage areas for teaching and research purposes. The Assistant Registrar is also available to assist with research requests, research projects and assigned class projects.

The Assistant Registrar is responsible for maintaining and growing the collections database. This will include; researching and cataloging objects, establishing provenance, digitalization of records and photography of objects.

Minimum Qualifications:  Must have practical knowledge of object/art handling and storage techniques. Knowledge of/and appreciation for art history and contemporary art. Ability to work both independently and also cooperatively with others in a fast-paced team environment. Strong verbal and editing skills, detail-oriented, and highly organized. Ability to speak in front of groups and work with students, faculty, museum colleagues and community members.

Working knowledge of museum digitization processes and storage/retrieval of data key. Familiarity with EmbArk, Aperture, Excel, scanning applications and digital photography all desirable.

Bachelor’s degree in an art related field or other field relevant to the Tang academic mission and 1-3 years’ experience working in a cultural institution, preferably in an art or history museum with an active exhibition schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:  Master’s degree or certificate in studio art, art history, history, museum studies or other field relevant to the Tang academic mission and/or equivalent work experience desirable.
