Job Description
The Andrew County Museum and Historical Society, a private nonprofit organization, invites applications for the position of curator. The museum is located 15 miles north of St. Joseph and 65 miles from Kansas City, Missouri. With a population of 5,000, Savannah serves as the county seat of a rural county with 19,000 residents. Andrew Countians delight in small town life and enjoy a low cost of living. The curator’s position is full-time with benefits (health, dental and vacation). A Masters Degree in History, American Studies or Museum Studies is required. Two years of museum experience is preferred. Applications will be accepted until October 15th.The museum now seeks a highly motivated, creative individual to serve as curator who, working with the Director and volunteers, will build upon the success of A Rural Way of Life to better serve our community. The curator will serve in a leadership role in the development of public and school programs and in planning and implementing a changing exhibition schedule. The curator must also be familiar with museum collections management, standards and best practices, preventative conservation, and supervision of volunteer staff. Computer skills including familiarity with Windows based and PastPerfect software are required. The curator should have excellent written and verbal skills. A knowledge of rural history is a definite plus. The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess sound research skills. Solid people skills are a must. The curator’s responsibilities include:

 

  • Implementing a newly-approved collections policy
  • Building and caring for the collections
  • Assisting researchers in the library and archives
  • Exhibit development and installation
  • Management of the Historical Society’s Website
  • Training and supervising volunteers and interns
  • Participating in budget development, fundraising activities and grant preparation
  • Participating in developing quality public and educational programs
  • Taking part in the StEPs strategic planning process now underway
