Director of Collections

Job Responsibilities

The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the position of Director of Collections. Working closely with the Director of the Morgan, this position will oversee the work of the Morgan’s seven curatorial departments, the Thaw Conservation Center, and the office of the Registrar. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Collections will also develop policies, procedures, and guidelines related to the management of the Morgan’s collection. In addition, the Director of Collections will administer the Morgan’s vibrant program of exhibitions, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of scholarship and interpretation, in conformity with the Strategic Plan. This position reports to the Director.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. preferred, either in history of art or other discipline related to the Morgan’s collections
  • Substantial experience in a senior curatorial role with managerial responsibilities at a museum or research library with special collections
  • A record of scholarly publications and research
  • Knowledge of issues and trends in the field of libraries and museums
  • Familiarity with dealers and auction houses
  • Outstanding capacity to lead and motivate staff, and to build consensus and encourage teamwork, while cultivating the strengths of each member of the curatorial leadership team
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills; excellent writing and public speaking skills
  • Creativity, and interest in making scholarship accessible to a broad audience
  • Good working knowledge of at least one relevant European language (French, German, Italian, Dutch, or Spanish)
  • Strong technology skills
  • Ability to travel as required
  • Able to work for extended periods standing or at a computer workstation
