Consults, plans or administers research, restoration, and interpretation programs to preserve and interpret historically significant architecture, archeological sites, objects, and events; performs related work as required.

The State Historical Society of Iowa, a Division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking for a highly motivated individual to provide oversight and direction of exhibit design, fabrication and installation of exhibits to be a part of our team.

Key responsibilities include:

Overseeing of day-to-day operability of exhibits; exhibit design, fabrication, construction and installation of exhibits and all related exhibit and media components; assisting with development and implementation of exhibit-specific plans based on discussion, interpretation of scripts and artifact selection; using museum best practices and current exhibit concepts and techniques; overseeing and developing when needed concept drawings, exhibit documents (for artifacts, labels, graphics, audio-visual, etc.), floor-plans, construction specifications, lighting, etc. for exhibits; creating or supervising graphic productions for exhibits, programs and installations; developing plans for History on the Move traveling exhibit; providing budget recommendations for exhibits and projects as necessary and leading special exhibits and State Historical Museum of Iowa projects as assigned. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to helping with artifact selection and preparation for exhibits; supervising artifact and collections handling, preparation, mounting and installation for exhibits; leading artifact and collections-based projects as assigned; and providing collections information or identification to constituents as requested.

 

Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in history, anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial–museum management, literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library science, historic preservation, and the equivalent of one year of full time experience in professional research, museum, education, editor, or other experience associated with history, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, architectural history, art, museums, historic sites, or historic preservation.

Additional Qualifications In addition to the required Museum Operations selective, preference will be given to those possessing exhibit design experience.
