Inaugural Exhibition Curator [The National Museum of Mathematics]

A rare opportunity to curate a new Manhattan exhibition space’s inaugural show.

The National Museum of Mathematics opens to curious minds of all ages this December 15.  MoMath will have an exhibition space in which it will host curated shows of math-related artwork.  Its inaugural show will open sometime between mid-September of 2013 and mid-March of 2014, running for at least three months.  MoMath seeks a curator for this exhibition.

The exhibition space is roughly 1,000 square feet with average dimensions: 53’ x 19’.  The ceiling is mostly 7’ 4” high but one of the long walls rises in a higher ceiling area to about 12’.  MoMath intends to produce a four-color exhibition catalogue with essays from the curator and others.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1)  Meet with MoMath leadership to discuss the institutional vision for its exhibition space.
2)  Propose potential approaches to exhibition programming consistent with this vision.
3)  Work with MoMath leadership to determine the inaugural show’s scale and budget.
4)  Develop a compelling plan for the inaugural show with as much specificity as possible.
5)  Lead senior staff and Art Committee members through a plan review and refinement process.
6)  Work with senior staff to develop a detailed exhibition implementation plan.
7)  Obtain Art Committee approval for the plan.
8)  Upon approval, execute the plan on time and within budget.

QUALITIES
1)  Significant New York area curatorial experience.
2)  Comfort and familiarity with a broad range of mathematical topics.
3)  Appreciation for the beauty and inspirational potential of mathematics.
4)  Extensive knowledge of existing math-related art.
5)  Knowledge of artists currently producing interesting math-related work.
6)  Experience producing and executing accurate exhibition budgets.
7)  Experience editing and producing exhibition catalogues.

Family Science Adventures Coordinator [The Springfield Museums]

Position Title: Family Science Adventures Coordinator Responsible for the development, planning and implementation of a variety of hands-on science activities to be offered for Museum visitors on weekends and during school vacation weeks.

Additional Duties:

Maintain Family Science Adventures activity supplies and materials, create themed science activities to correspond with special exhibitions, school vacation weeks and other museum events. Some aspects of this position may require standing for long periods of time, and lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.

Qualifications:

• Must be enthusiastic, dependable, and enjoy working with families and the general public.

• Experience working independently with little supervision. • Experience teaching in a Museum or other informal

educational setting.

• Experience planning science activities and creating lesson plans.

• Must have reliable transportation.

Educational Requirements:

Ideal candidates must have a minimum of an Associate’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education or other related field.Part-time

$12.05 per hour Position Starts: Immediately Saturday’s and Sunday’s 10:30-2:30 October through June 2013, including some holidays, December, February & April School Vacation Weeks, as needed up to 15 hours per week..

Education Coordinator [MoMath]

The Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is seeking creative, energetic individuals to join its educational staff. This position will have broad responsibility to implement a variety of MoMath programs, including:

 

  • Field trip offerings for classes, camps, and other groups that visit the museum; in-museum public demonstrations and group activities
  • Mobile museum curricula, including educational outreach activities occurring in schools, community centers, public spaces, and so on
  • Teacher professional development
  • Internship programs
  • After-school and weekend math clubs or enrichment programs
  • Summer math camps and programs

The position of Education Coordinator offers the opportunity to participate in and influence one of America’s major efforts in mathematical outreach to students, teachers, and the public. This position reports to the Chief of Education of the Museum.

MoMath is seeking candidates with demonstrated experience and skill in conveying the breadth, beauty, vitality, usefulness, and excitement of modern mathematics to diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will have experience with and enthusiasm for working with groups of K-12 students on mathematical activities.

Teaching experience is highly desirable, and museum experience is a plus.

The successful applicant must have a love of communicating mathematical ideas at all levels of sophistication and understanding, especially in ways pitched to be meaningful to a broad public.

Education Programs Associate offers administrative support to the Academic

Programs area, in particular, to the College and Graduate Student Internship

Program.  This position also provides administrative support 2 days a week

to the division of School and Teacher Programs, with the exception of a two

month period when the internship program is at its’ highest level of

activity. The incumbent supports the Observant Eye program, Teaching Corps

Internship and serves as back-up for other administrative staff.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

* Process and assist in review of online internship applications; coordinate

interviews for prospective interns; mail acceptance/rejection letters;

process and maintain paperwork for I.D.s, project plans, evaluations, etc.

* Prepare contract letters/agreements for paid and unpaid interns; assist

with Visa and Social Security card processes for foreign paid interns;

process requests for payment and track expenses for interns and contractual

lecturers

* Assist Educator with planning and implementation of summer internship

orientation, receptions and other events throughout the year

* Maintain internship section of the website; coordinate program information

for publications, online calendar, and other future venues as it pertains to

Internships and Academic Programs in general

* Support other areas of Academic Programs and School and Teacher Programs

by administering, registration, scheduling, collaborating with other

departments in the museum and outside constituencies.  Prepare readings and

handouts for training sessions and workshops, coordinate logistics; enter

events/resources into EMS and Vista scheduling systems, including Intern

tours and teacher workshops; compile and report overall statistics

* Create/maintain college mailing list and database of internship

applicants; establish alumni network; coordinate/collaborate with the

College Group at the Museum; coordinate marketing efforts and other means of

communication such as web postings, and email blasts

* Other related duties

 

Experience and Skills:

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

* Attention to detail required; excellent organizational and typing skills

preferred

* Ability to be flexible and to multitask preferred as is ability to take

initiative

 

Knowledge and Education:

* B.A. required, interest in art history preferred

* Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (MS Access, Excel, PowerPoint,

Word, and Outlook required)

Museum Educator [Intrepid Sea, Air, Space Museum]

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America¹s leading historic,

We are seeking a *Museum Educator* who will conduct school tours and

workshops and assist in the delivery of a wide range of programming

including after-school, off-site programs at schools and community centers,

teacher professional development programs, weekend programming for

families, Access programs for visitors with special needs, Girl and Boy

Scout events, holiday and summer camps, and weekend demonstrations.  The

Museum Educator will work closely with select department managers to

develop such new programming as those for schools, families, special needs

audiences, teachers, and scouts.  Museum education or classroom experience

preferred.  This position requires creativity, energy, organization and

strong communication and presentation skills.

 

*Responsibilities include but are not limited to:*

 

– Primary teaching responsibility includes the delivery of Museum

programs to students in grades K-12

– On-ship tours, workshops and distance learning

– Off-ship science and history sessions in NYC schools and

after-school programing

– Programming at libraries, senior centers, hospitals and other

community organizations

– Lead programming for the general public and families, during holiday

and summer camp programs, for scouts, teachers, overnights, visiting

college groups, and other private groups (often scheduled on weekends and

holidays).

– Collaborate with colleagues within the Education Department as well as

professional staff in curatorial, development, and museum services

departments on programs, events and Museum logistics.

– Weekend scheduling for public programs, family programs, and

educational events.

– Represent the department at trade shows, teacher events, fairs, and

community events

– Perform other duties as required by management

 

Qualified candidates will have a BA in Education, Sciences or Museum

Studies and a minimum of 5 years teaching experience. Experience in museum

education and science preferred. This position requires creativity, energy,

organization and strong communication and presentation skills. Proven

experience teaching in schools, museums, or similar venue preferred.

Knowledge of word processing essential. Ability to work independently,as

well as in a team environment. Some weekend and holiday work will be

required.
