Curatorial positions are available at Sumei Art Center for 2013

Eligibility: Curatorial and Writing Experience

To Apply: Please send email to yoland@sumei.org with résumé and cover letter with suggestions for curatorial subject/ideas, as well as experience in various past curatorial situations, experience with various computer platforms, Excel and Google docs, your interest in contemporary art and experience  working with the public. Include any print materials that explore past works.

Curators must be able to do own fundraising, or work with Sumei staff to secure funding for their curatorial projects. Sumei Art Center has several spaces for exhibition possibilities as well as programs already planned that are in need of curators.

Curatorial Responsibilities will be negotiated in a specific agreement/contract based on the needs of each exhibition to include: Email and phone communications with artists, arts organizations, art suppliers etc., studio visits, contracts for artworks, personal communications with artists, writing for exhibition materials, and more.

Curatorial staff must structure their own hours and keep detailed time sheets.

Sumei Art Center is a nonprofit alternative arts organization based in the Ironbound Section of Newark, NJ- founded in 1993. The organization currently curates 5,000 sq ft of gallery space.  The space is dismountable and gallery walls are moveable to create any possible scenario.   Catalogs and various publications have evolved into a yearly magazine produced by Sumei with the help of the community which delves into the history and arts of the community and the roles they play in the lives of artists and community.
