POSITION SUMMARY:

Leads the development of innovative, dynamic, creative, and participatory public programs and engagement strategies for visitors of all ages and stages of museum experience at the High and in the Atlanta community.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

·       Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

·       Must also be able to work evenings and weekends for program oversight and implementation as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES include the following:

·       Confers with the Director of Education to identify and develop community partnership strategies to support the goal to serve as a visual arts and humanities resource for Atlanta and the Southeast.

·       Develops and maintains a strong network with community organizations in alignment with institutional objectives. Represents the High to increase institutional visibility and participation in the community.

·       Guides the conceptualization, development and implementation of Public Program offerings for all visitors, for example: lectures, courses, symposia, films, performances, family days, summer camp, studio programs, teen programs, college programs, community days, and new audience initiatives.

·       Works closely and collaboratively with Education Department colleagues, the Curatorial Department, the Marketing Department, and the Membership and Guest Relations Department, to formulate and promote public programs that reach museum audience targets.

·       Maintains extensive contact with the general public, the Atlanta community, artists, scholars, and professionals of art, art history, film, design, architecture, and fields related to the High Museum’s collection and special exhibitions.

·       Oversees the management of the Education Center in collaboration with the Head of School Programs. Prepares and manages budget for public programs.

·       Analyzes data to determine prospective users, audiences, and potential funding sources for programming and partnerships.

·       Prepares grant project narratives and reports for public programs in collaboration with the Museum Advancement Department.

·       Evaluates public programs produced by the Museum and our partnerships to assess quality and determine improvements needed in production and presentation of programs.

·       Participates in national and international dialogue about public programs and community engagement in museums. Remains aware and informed about current public program/lifelong learning research and best practices.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES  include the following:

·       Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

·       Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

·       Manages and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units:

o   Manager of Family Programs and New Audience Initiatives, who supervises one assistant and

contract employees in Family and New Audience programs;

o   Coordinator of Teen Programs, who supervises one assistant and contract employees in youth

programs.

o   Coordinator of Adult Programs and Community Events.

o   Public Programs Assistant.

o   Additional contract instructors.

Education and Experience:

·       Master’s degree (M. A.) and 5 – 7 years experience in community partnerships and public programming (children – adults) in the visual arts; or B.A. and 10 – 12 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills:

·       Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals.

·       Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and grant project narratives.

·       Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

·       Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.

·       Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

Mathematical Skills

·       Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

·       Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability:

·       Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

·       Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills:

·       To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Project Management software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
