Director [Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at the University of Illinois at Chicago]

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, with appointment beginning summer of 2013. The Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is responsible for the overall direction of the museum and its programs that serve as a memorial to social reformer Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and her colleagues whose work changed the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy. The Director will lead and oversee the future growth of this internationally-known museum that represents Jane Addams’s and the Hull-House settlement’s commitments to social change, public service and education. The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, part of the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is a historic site that continues to welcome some of the world’s most important thinkers, artists and activists. The director should embrace the UIC Social Justice Initiative to “create knowledge that transforms our views of the world and, through sharing and application, transforms the world.”

 

Qualifications: A minimum of a master’s degree in an appropriate field within the arts, history or a field related to the Hull-House legacy, and at least five years’ experience in management, education, resource and program development in a museum or related organization required. Record of academic achievement and success in securing grants and fundraising strongly preferred. Potential for concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department.

Curatorial Assistant [Addison Gallery]

Working under the supervision

of the senior curators at the Addison Gallery of American

Art, the Curatorial Assistant assists the curatorial department in all

aspects of their responsibilities, including department administration,

research and catalogue collections, development and maintenance

of artist and object records, curatorial loans, development

and implementation of exhibition and publication projects, and

general curatorial inquiries.

 

Additional duties and responsibilities: Assist the curatorial department’s

development and implementation of exhibition and publication

projects with particular focus on management of loans,

checklists, manuscripts, associated correspondence, and record

keeping; assist with all aspects of departmental administration,

including answering inquiries from the public and scholars; carry

out, under supervision, research, care, and interpretation of permanent

collection; write interpretive text, wall texts, and catalogue

entries as requested; assist with planning and development of

artists’ projects, public programming, and artist-in-residence program;

manage artists’ submissions; serve as curatorial liaison for

team-taught Museum Studies course.

 

Qualifications: MA degree in art or art history, with emphasis on

modern or contemporary art, or BA with significant museum experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and

proven interpretive writing ability required. High level of enthusiasm,

strict attention to detail, and rigorous approach to tasks. Ability

to work cooperatively with a curatorial team, manage more

than one project at a time, and meet deadlines. Superior research,

computer, and database skills required. Interest in and capacity to

interact with students necessary.

Public Programs Coordinator [The National Hellenic Museum]

Position Summary:

The Public Programs Coordinator will report to the Director of Museum Experience and will be primarily responsible for the creation and implementation of public programming at the National Hellenic Museum. This includes evaluating and developing potential programs, scheduling and coordinating programs, and assisting in the sponsorship and marketing of all museum programs. The Programs Coordinator will also be responsible for Institutional outreach, developing and maintaining partnerships with other organizations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate public programs that promote the mission and exhibitions of the NHM, including lectures, demonstrations, symposia, classes, and other non-traditional programming.
  • Coordinate the Calendar of Programs and Events.
  • Develop and manage productive partnerships with outside organizations, locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Collaborate with area schools, colleges, and arts institutions on lecture topics, joint programming and securing presenters.
  • Assist marketing staff with marketing museum programming and events through a variety of media including print, email, website and social media outlets.
  • Write copy for website, newsletters, and brochures.
  • Assist in the recruiting of volunteers for museum programs and events.
  • Provide support for all programming (includes evenings and weekends.)
  • Collaborate with other staff to secure funding for programming.

The Museum Educator will also be responsible for training docents and assisting with volunteer scheduling.

  • Plan, develop, and implement educational programs and tours for student, adult, and other visiting groups.
  • Maintain a robust docent program.
  • Develop and manage productive partnerships with outside organizations, locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Assist in grant research and grant writing for educational programs.

As a member of the Library and Archives Department, the Assistant Archivist is responsible for the operation and maintenance of archives database; providing organizational and staff support for new accessions; arranging, re-housing and describing archives collections; coordinating, scheduling and training interns; assisting in other Archives functions as directed by the Director of the Library and Archives.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no direct reports associated with this position.

Key Responsibilities:
•Responsible for accessioning archival materials including both paper and electronic; interact with staff to evaluate record submissions.

•Process (arrange, describe, re-house) archival materials according to current industry standards including creation of processing plans; appraisal evaluations; and DACS-compliant EAD finding aids and MARC records.

•Provide reference services for in-house staff and external researchers as directed, including researching and answering reference questions for staff, and providing reference assistance via telephone, e-mail and in person for external researchers.

•Supervise archives interns and volunteers as needed providing a friendly and challenging work environment.

•Ensure quality and uniformity of archives records; perform retrospective changes or upgrades to individual records as needed.

•Collaborate on special projects with curatorial, registrar, legal, and other museum departments as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:
•MLIS or equivalent; Bachelor’s in Art or Art history preferred

•Minimum three years experience working with archival collections

•Strong communication and organizational skills

•Must be able to lift up to 40 lb boxes

•Knowledge of Museum purposes, organization, and procedures preferred.

•Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.

•Ability to work independently in various environments ranging from office setting to warehouse storage facilities.
