Title: Director of Education & Public Programming
Report to: Executive Director
Employment Type: Full-Time
Overview of Position:
The Director of Education & Public Programming is responsible for developing
and managing comprehensive design-oriented educational and public
programming plans (both short and long term) as well as creating,
implementing, and maintaining design-oriented educational and public
programs that reflect the Museum of Design Atlanta’s (MODA) mission and that
meet the needs of the diverse audiences we serve.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Work with Executive Director and senior staff to set the vision and
goals for the Department of Education and Public Programming
* Develop and implement public programs for children, families, and
adults
* Collaborate with the Exhibitions Manager to develop interactive and
participatory design experiences throughout the museum
* Recruit, train, and supervise education interns and work with the
Volunteer Manager to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for programs
* Develop and implement design-based educational and public programs
including on-site guided tours, professional development experiences, camps,
workshops, courses, and off-site visits
* Plan, develop, implement and evaluate in-school and out-of-school
partnerships with school teachers, school administrators, and staff at
partner community organizations
* Work with staff to develop and implement an outreach plan to grow new
and repeat attendance to educational and public programs
* Market resources and programs to K-12 and teacher audiences
* Oversee established programs such as campMODA, Drink in Design, and
Design Conversation
* Train and supervise campMODA staff
* Insure that all educational and public programs are evaluated in a
consistent manner
* Prepare reports of education and public program attendance including
narratives when appropriate
* Negotiate and manage contracts with teaching artists and consultants
* Oversee the efforts of any consultants hired to develop educational
programs or resources
* Work with Executive Director to develop and manage all departmental
budgets.
* Work with Director of Development in preparing, tracking, evaluating,
and reporting of all education programming grants
Other Responsibilities:
* Successfully and passionately represent the Museum, its mission and
its goals to the community. Articulate and promote the Museum’s exhibition
philosophy and program goals
* Develop and implement tools and measurements to evaluate success of
tasks and projects connected to this position
* Be a supremely capable and enthusiastic collaborator
* Promote the Museum’s programs
* Exhibit generosity, creativity, and common sense in working closely
with all Museum constituent groups
* Build strategic partnerships both outside and inside the museum
Job Requirements
Required Knowledge and Skills:
* Experience and proven success in creating and implementing programs
that teach design thinking and core design skills in participatory and
innovative ways
* Excellent verbal and written skills
* Proficient in Microsoft Office
* Knowledge of Georgia Performance Standards
Qualifications:
* Graduate degree in related field (education, museum education, etc.)
preferred.
* 3 – 5 years of experience and a track record in development,
implementation, and evaluation of educational and/or public programs,
preferably in a museum setting
* Working knowledge of informal learning theory and practice, museum
visitor studies, and art and/or design-based education
* Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work
closely with colleagues, trustees, volunteers, and community leaders
* Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with a diverse range
of groups and organizations
* Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate a team
* Strong ability to be creative and think critically
* Self-starter with strong organizational skills
* Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced working
environment
* Available to work some evenings and weekends as necessary.
