The American Philosophical Society (APS) Museum seeks a full-time curatorial assistant. Duties
include the following: monitor department expenses and budgets; assist the Collection Manager
with handling permanent collection objects (mostly late 18
th
– and early 19
th
-century art and
artifacts); assist with all aspects of exhibition installation (label production, exhibition object
rotation and other limited registrarial tasks); and conduct departmental administrative duties
(correspondence, preparation of budgets, grant reporting, management of files, tracking of press,
and other museum functions).
This position, which reports directly to the Director/Curator, provides an excellent opportunity to
learn all aspects of museum work and to be part of a small and versatile staff. Skills and
knowledge needed: outstanding organizational skills and resourcefulness; strong writing and
editing skills; ability to multi-task and to work both independently and with others; computer
literacy (experience with databases and word processing necessary; experience with Microsoft
Excel, Photoshop, and Illustrator highly desirable). Some museum experience and knowledge of
curatorial/registrarial procedures highly preferred. B.A. or M.A. essential, in history of art,
museum studies, or material culture studies. Competitive salary with excellent benefits.
