Background: The New York Hall of Science, New York City’s only hands-on
science museum and host to close to a half a million visitors every year,
serves the most ethnically diverse population in the country — reflecting
the institution’s home borough of Queens and also that of the greater
metropolitan area. Built originally for the 1964 World’s Fair, NYSCI
continues to capture the spirit of discovery and innovation that was at the
heart of this event. NYSCI offers an unparalleled range of 450 interactive
exhibits that invite visitors to explore varied aspects of science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM). By combining these exhibits with
the country’s largest outdoor Science Playground along with discovery labs,
teacher-training programs, and internationally replicated science education
programs for urban youth, NYSCI brings the excitement and understanding of
science and technology to children, families, and teachers throughout the
New York metro-region and beyond.
Our mission is to bring the excitement and understanding of science and
technology to children, families, teachers, and others by galvanizing their
curiosity and offering them creative, participatory ways to learn.

Function: Lead the development and implementation of science programs and
exhibits for young learners, their caregivers and educators. Candidates
should be well versed in early childhood STEM practice and theory; have
solid experience working with families and the public and managing programs
and staff. Working closely with senior leadership at NYSCI, individual
should be committed to growing and developing new and innovative work in
the area of early childhood learning.

Principal Responsibilities:
1. Oversee the design, development and implementation of all education
programs as related to early childhood and family learning, specifically
child and parent programs, outreaches, student workshops and curriculum
materials.
2. Developing curriculum and facilitation methods for programs for children
with developmental disabilities including children on the autism spectrum.
3. Deliver new and existing workshops onsite and offsite for children,
teachers and families.
4. Work collaboratively with NYSCI staff and outside partners to create and
implement large and small-scale projects for schools and families.
5. Support part-time youth staff that work in early childhood spaces and
facilitate family learning programs.
6. Collaborate with senior education and program staff to grow research and
development initiatives in early childhood education at NYSCI.
7. Coordinate documentation (including photography, videography, interviews
and surveys) of all Family Learning programs and work with the Director of
Early Childhood Education and the Director of Web Strategy to maintain
NYSCI’s Early Childhood and Family Learning blog, Flickr sites and other
social media assets.
8. Work weekends and evenings as needed.
9. Complete other tasks as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Support Residents and Explainers.

Qualifications

Education: Minimum BA in early childhood education with a background in
science, technology, engineering, or math field. Master’s degree in related
field preferred.

Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a children’s museum,
science center, natural history museum or early childhood classroom, or
working in youth development.

Compensation: Commensurate with education, skills and experience, including
