Overview:

The Assistant Registrar for Collections is primarily responsible for the safe transport of special collection materials throughout the NYPL system, most commonly between the Research Libraries in Manhattan and the Library Services Center in Long Island City (LSC) and back to their home collection site; and to track the location of these materials while they are away from their home collection site. Position reports to the Head of Registrar Services.

Responsibilities:
-Coordinate the logistical and physical movement of special collections items throughout the NYPL system
-Liaise with curators, conservators, security, digital imaging and processing staff to ensure the best workflow
-Maintain accurate movement records, issuing the proper documentation to track the objects (e.g. Special Collections Move Request Form, Receipt of Delivery and Receipt of Return)
-Update collections tracking database
-Receive and release special collection items to/from curatorial units
-Pack collection items for safe transport
-Make truck arrangements
-Act as on-truck courier for the transport of special collection items between the Research Libraries, LSC, and any other buildings as needed
-Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:
-B.A. in art-related field, Museum Studies, Museum Administration, Arts Administration, Library Studies or Archives Studies.
-One to three years experience in registration at a museum, archive, library or gallery setting.
-Comprehensive knowledge of varied media handling, packing, transport, and storage best practice techniques.
-Ability to set priorities and facilitate complex scheduling.
-Computer skills, Excel and database experience desirable
-Must be extremely well organized and detail oriented.
-Able to lift 50 pounds and ride on trucks.
-Prior art handler experience desirable.
-Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
