The National Gallery of Art seeks a highly motivated individual to provide editorial and managerial expertise for its website and publications related to the permanent collection, especially the Systematic Catalogue of the Collections and to the Gallery’s education, library, and research departments.

Establishes and maintains a master plan for the publication of approximately eighteen proposed Systematic Catalogues, of which two or three will be active at any one time, in consultation with the editor in chief and the deputy director and chief curator. Acts as project manager to the Getty Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI), an initiative that has been underway for several years and is in the process of being designed and implemented in 2013. Manages and oversees the preparation, editing, design and production (print or online) of the Systematic Catalogues and other volumes. Describes duties for, assigns work to, and mentors assistant editors. Prepares grant applications and follow-up reports and drafts fiscal year budgets. Selects and negotiates agreements with outside authors, translators, copy editors, proofreaders, designers, digital media contractors, indexers, photographers, and other freelancers and reviews their work for completeness and quality.  Demonstrates knowledge of art history and demonstrates understanding of various art-historical methodologies gained through an academic degree or through sustained experience in an art museum or with a scholarly art or cultural studies publisher.  Works side-by-side with IT and web personnel to develop the technical requirements for each online or digital project. In addition to a strong grasp of printing technology, demonstrates a clear knowledge of the principles and processes of digital and web technology.
