Director of Education [Folger Shakespeare Library]

The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks a dynamic individual to direct a nationally recognized Education Department. The successful candidate will demonstrate creative and strategic vision to grow a well-regarded current set of Shakespeare and related programs for teacher training and K-12 education; expand Folger teacher training initiatives nationally; and develop innovative ways of connecting the local and national public to Folger resources and projects.

The Director of Education will represent the Folger nationally to a diverse community of educational partners–foundations, government funding agencies such as the NEH, educational institutions and organizations, teachers, and visitors. Duties include creating and implementing multimedia approaches to education, developing original programming to support the Folger mission, and overseeing local and national training and teaching programs to advance the national reputation of the Folger.  The Director of Education reports to the Director of the Library, works collegially with 5 other division heads, and directly supervises 4 employees in charge of various programs.

Job Requirements

Desired qualifications: Graduate degree in English or education, Ph.D. or Ed.D. or equivalent experience  preferred. Minimum of seven years experience in successful program leadership, development, management, and assessment for a national educational or cultural organization.  Teaching experience at elementary or secondary level and experience providing professional development training required. . Broad knowledge of national educational trends and a thorough understanding of Shakespeare are essential  Experience with curriculum development required, along with an understanding of when and how digital media may be productively introduced into teaching.
