The Learning and Interpretation Intern, under the general supervision of the Director of Learning and Interpretation, will assist in developing and implementing the museum’s new in-gallery PMA Art Cart. Premiering in June, the PMA Art Cart will be a moveable art station that provides visitors with the opportunity to draw in the PMA galleries. The intern will staff the cart and research the permanent collection and current exhibitions to develop art activities and educational resources. In this position the intern will engage visitors and encourage participation. The intern will document the process and progress of the PMA Art Cart and write reports that will be used to evaluate the program. In support of the museum’s mission, the intern will collaborate with other staff to help create a dynamic experience for PMA visitors.

Duties:

  • Staff the PMA Art Cart two days a week (Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. & Fridays 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Research the PMA permanent collection and develop educational materials for PMA Art Cart use in different galleries.
  • Work with the Learning and Interpretation Department to prepare content and materials for the cart.
  • Develop appropriate sketching activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Engage and assist visitors drawing in the galleries.
  • Respond to visitor requests and questions regarding general museum information.
  • Work with PMA Protection Services and Visitor Experience staff to coordinate the location and operation of the cart.
  • Work with Learning and Interpretation staff to evaluate and assess the PMA Art Cart program, which may include visitor interviews, data tabulation, reports, and analysis.
  • Document the PMA Art Cart program, which will involve taking photos and writing blogs for use on PMA social media platforms.

Qualifications:

  • Outgoing and comfortable working with museum visitors of all ages, including children, teens, adults, and seniors.
  • Excellent customer service and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with coworkers.
  • Studio art and/or drawing experience.
  • Knowledge of art history.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to conduct effective research.
  • Applicant should be currently enrolled in or have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program in Art History, Education, Museum Studies, Museum Education, Studio Art, or related field.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

The internship is unpaid, but interns receive free admission to the PMA for themselves and a guest, and discounts in the PMA Store and Café.

Period:
Wednesdays and Fridays in June and July 2013 (June 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 and July 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31)

Hours: 
12 hours per week for June and July 2013 (Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.)
