Senior Curator of Exhibitions

Wexner Center for the Arts

The Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University is seeking a Senior Curator to work in tandem with the center’s Director to conceive, research, plan, and execute the overall exhibition program, consisting of approximately 7-10 contemporary exhibitions per year spanning all visual arts disciplines and featuring artists at all phases of their respective careers; work with Director and Curator-at-Large to select Wexner Center artists-in-residence and to commission new work in conjunction with select exhibitions; in close collaboration with the Director of Exhibitions Management, monitor all aspects of the exhibition program (budgets, schedules, and other logistical and production matters) for originally conceived shows, those borrowed from other institutions, and those organized by the Wexner Center that will travel to other venues; collaborate with other curatorial departments (performing arts and film/video) to reinforce the multidisciplinary profile of the center; collaborate with other museums and art centers when key opportunities arise; facilitate and ensure effective communication and collaboration within the exhibitions department; ensure effective communication and collaboration across the center (editorial and design staff on related publications; marketing and communications staff on promotional, outreach, and advertising efforts; development staff on funding proposals; education staff on developing/executing interpretive and educational programs surrounding the exhibition; security staff on issues pertaining to safeguarding the works of art and the public in the galleries); maintain and strengthen center’s regional, national, and international network of artists, institutional collaborators, collectors, and patrons to continually enhance the center’s overall reputation; actively engage with academic colleagues at OSU and elsewhere, both initiating and responding to cross-campus opportunities for meaningful collaboration; represent the Wexner Center on various campus and community initiatives/committees, as requested by the Director; participate in weekly senior staff meetings and program meetings as scheduled; reports to Director; hours vary and include evenings, weekends, and possible holidays; successful completion of a background check required prior to start date.

Master’s degree in Art History or equivalent combination of education and experience required; working knowledge of 20th and 21st century art, with a specialty in contemporary art required; 3-5 years of experience in organizing exhibitions that demonstrate rigorous and original thinking, explore emerging artists and/or phenomena, or unearth/reframe historical figures or practices required; excellent communication skills, including public speaking, writing and a strong publication record required; a strong network of contacts in the field, including, artists, fellow curators, collectors, patrons, and academic colleagues required; excellent research skills required.
